Report: Geno Smith looks out of shape at Jets camp

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 29, 2013, 7:43 PM EDT

    AP
In the race to become the Jets’ starting quarterback, Geno Smith is lagging behind Mark Sanchez in at least one respect: Physical conditioning.

That’s the word from Brian Baldinger of NFL Network, who was at Jets camp on Sunday and said Smith looked out of shape during wind sprints following practice. According to Baldinger, Smith couldn’t keep up with Sanchez or anyone else in the group of players doing conditioning drills together.

“He looked good yesterday until they ran gassers at the end of practice, and Geno Smith looked like he had done no conditioning,” Baldinger said of Smith. “It was actually embarrassing to see how far behind he was behind Sanchez, [Matt] Simms and everybody else that’s there.”

Smith is a faster runner than Sanchez (Smith ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.6-second range at the Scouting Combine, while Sanchez was in the 4.9-second range), so if Sanchez is beating Smith in wind sprints, that suggests that Sanchez has taken his conditioning much more seriously this offseason. That would seem to be a point in Sanchez’s favor as Rex Ryan, John Idzik and others make the “group effort” to pick the starter.

But much more important than wind sprints is the ability to run the offense, and Baldinger said in that respect, Smith looked good on the practice field.

“He did look good getting in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage, getting the ball out of his hands quickly,” Baldinger said.

That’s what really matters to playing quarterback. But it would be nice to see Smith get himself into shape.

    Is this for real?

Probably the dumbest report I've ever written.

Hopefully our QBs don't have to run 50 yards too often.

Certain members of the media still want to defame Geno's character.

    I'm not interested.

so the 40 yard TD scamper in practice was all for not? Go figure.....

I know this is very irrelevant, but his legs look very lacking in muscle to me. His calves are as cut as a cocktail wiener.

Lol, always gotta have a "story". The thing I found funny was that Geno practicing well after they all labeled him a bust and a diva was just a FOOTNOTE in that "article".

Anyone who takes NFLN or ESPN seriously anymore is bonkers.

Baldinger was joking. I heard the interview. Talk about media spinning something. Sheesh.

Look at it this way, if that's all they have to complain about, I'll take it

I haven't seen anything through the first four days of practice that would lead me to think that Geno Smith is out of shape. #nyj

Brian Costello also doesn't buy into this Geno was out of shape nonsense.

Just Baldy talking out of his ass again...

Baldinger did make a big point of it on an NFL.com video. Hey, there are going to positives and negatives on everyone out there. How can you start screaming dump because you don't like a fact? You a commie or something?

Even Manish has chimed in. Says he hasn't seen anything to suggest Geno is out of shape.

The biggest story-spinner in the world is calling this report bs. End of story.

LMAO That' the story they went with?

Well whatever chum they need to feed the sharks circling around the "Jets Circus".

I've heard nothing but positives about Geno in camp aside from this "story". Another great job of journalism by the TMZ of the football world.

I took it as he was telling the truth but making a joke about it. IIRC the people he was talking to were laughing a bit too. It was during one of his camp reports on NFLN.

I'm pretty sure McNight was the only player who failed the conditioning test
