If you take an inside backer that high, he better be the best in the league.

The problem with Holmes is that he essentially flipped the ball in the air

Actually, if he is shooting gaps and not taking up blockers, it makes thing harder on Keuchly. When a D-Lineman is disrupting plays in the backfield, it also causes backs to ad-lib from where plays are meant to go, this also makes things harder for LBs since the gap responsabilities are all thrown off.

A LBs best friend are huge D-lineman that just engulf 1-2 blockers and let the LBs run free and make plays. They don't really want guys shooting through the line unless its a designed stunt. It's fine if they make the tackle for a loss, but if he doesn't, it could be trouble for the LB.

Makes no difference. That is actually more proof that he gave himself up. If he just dropped it, it could be seen more as a simple fumble.

Doug Williams flipped the ball in the air as well when he hurt his knee. Best part is he didn't even get hurt bad enough to leave the game! LOL

When the RB has to stop and change direction into the gaps that the LBs fill on a 3 technique, it makes it easy. Someone is getting the tackle. He's been slashing in the 3 technique all game over the guard.

Their GDT literally revolves around Tebow adjusting his cup, lifting his shirt, and riding a bike in his underwear.

Not necessarily easy on the LB since the blockers that miss the DL are now in position to block the LB instead.

I'd have to see the plays. If he is shooting gaps and taking blockers with him along the way, great, but if the blockers are passing him off and going to the next level for the LBs, that's not fun for the LBs, an if the DL doesn't make the play there are huge cutback lanes and all kinds of mess for the LBs to deal with. If he in lined up in a 3 tech and shoots through the B, that's great if the play was coming off tackle to that side, but if its not, and the guard lets him go, they cut it back, Keuchly now has the center AND the guard to deal with, and possibly a fullback... He's cooked.

Lotulelei was lined up over the guard and was shooting the 3 gap.

The other DT (Edwards or sometimes Short) was over the guard and playing inside, or the 1 gap. That causes double teams from the center. Lotulelei and the other DT would switch responsibilities sometimes, but the 3 of them made it difficult for any lineman to reach the 2nd level, hence, Keuchly ran around free. Sometimes they'd both hit the A gaps (between center and guard) or sometimes they'd go A - B (between guard and tackle). There are two more defensive linemen (Charles and Hardy) who are the DEs, and line up over the tackles and play 4 and/or 6 techniques depending on what the DTs are doing, responsible for the B and C gaps. 5-techniques are usually for 3-4 defenses.

That's what it is when you hear "3-technique", which is traditionally a DT from a 4-3.

    Star Lotulelei.
