On my way to London ON, which I decided to visit on a whim.
Wasngt going to drive all the way back in 1 day, didnt want to stay
in DET, but I had loads of Marriott Points but oddly there
are no Marriotts in Windsor ON, a much more fun place and home
of my beloved CKLW.
Unfortunately, I got out of the blocks too late, took too long to get to
94 North and missed out on eating at a place
that the proud Londoners can comment on, Auberge Du Petit Prince.
Drove through MI in sunnier weather, different terrain.
More forest like. Lots of Wineries Casinos and Lake Beaches
Fire Keepers Casino Battle Creek MI. Who is Gretchen Wilson ?
Finally at the freakin' border, Port Huron/Sarnia over the bridge. Too late even to use my NEXUS/GOES card (like an EZ-PAss for Customs)
or enjoy the breathtaking view of Lake Huron to the N.

Got in to Residence Inn downtown at 11:40 PM . Time to rest. Just 6 hours of sleep since Monday AM.
Everything closed and the sidewalks rolled up for the night.
Residence Inn - very likely remodeled from an old Marriott but OK
As I mention occasionally I like shopping for certain groceries that aint available here like
certain bacon, meats, baked goods and beer. As workaday and average as they seem to
our Great White Northern pals.
Best fudge cookies possibly ever, or at least since Fudge Town disappeared (no not F Douches favorite "bar")
Was going to add to Chicken & "Waddles" thread but didnt want to share the glory-In Canada
they have their own version of the Lay's flavour contest, which hasnt ended yet. They gotz 4 opposed to our 3,
one I couldnt bring myself to buy, "Maple Moose" but the others seemed good (havent tasted them yet)
- viddy these my droogs:
Maple Moose , Grilled Cheese and Ketchup
Passed on these but when gassing up on the way outta London at Esso on Wellington Road
I saw these and had to buy
creator of Grilled Cheese and Ketchup
Which JI Shmoo does the creator look like most?? Maybe you can start a poll...
Now to downtown London itself. Although there are still some prominent
companies (Kellogg's, for example) there have been some big closures
as well (EMD, Caterpillar) and the vibe I get is that the town is in
transition, downward. It gobbled up local towns maybe for tax $, and is the 11th largest city
in the country but seems dead, and well, provincial.
There isn't a major store downtown, the consolidated
The Bay left the troubled mall, and the mayor Joe Fontana (L) is
mired in scandal.
One nice corner...
..gives way to meh
Tallest bldg, dunno what it is
Went to nearest Beer Store, which is one of only 2 companies licensed in ON to sell beer. Owned by Molson Labatt and about 2% by the other very small players.
The other is LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) which sells liquor wine and beer. Like the PA Govt owned Package Stores
Rummy in front (took the photo as I drove in, didnt notice Titanbuoy there until I looked at this snap)
is returning a load of bottles, but I have no idea what their recycling scheme yields money or credit wise

Now on my way home through Buffalo. Decided to visit another Roadfood place Schwabl's West Seneca NY after my Duty Free shopping.
Almost forgot, I did buy an assortment of beers.
One of my favorites, which I am quaffing now, is Molson Export Ale.
BITD in College Blue Label Molson Golden Ale was a US favorite but I found
in MA exported Red Label Molson Export Ale, I liked even better and the brewed and sold in Canada
version even better 'n that. Is Molson Golden even around any more?
Two of my other old faves, the Canadian version of Black Label
(acquired in Canada by Molson) and relegated to Duty Free
Malt Liquor strength Brador seemed to have vanished in ON at least.
SO I got a small assortment hoping to find more in Duty Free.
I did pick up at LCBO in London Wellington Road the successor to Innis & Gunn Spiced Rum
At the Beer Store where a nice Idzik-like gent was at the counter I got most of these as a small assortment.
It was a ***** getting them to pose!
Carling - might be the renamed Black Label, this is the #1 beer in the UK
Molson Export Ale - that I got at Duty Free and I love
Seagram's Classic Lemonade. What a disappointment. Made by a small co in Canada
and not by Genesee/ N. American who makes the tame but tasty Seagrams Escapes.
At 5% was expecting a Mike's Hard Lemonade and got a tart, Cider/Apple Juice blended
something that got a Danny Thomas spit-take and down the drain. The other 5 of the
6 will be foisted on my next party host.
Pilsner, yes that's the name, is a Midwestern Canada brand of note that Molson acquired
and I dont expect much from
Labatt maximum ICe, brewed in Canada, that is a solid brew I bought a few of, strong too
Labatt Blue, yes I like it somewhat, but BITD Labatt 50-50 was considered a premium
import beer in teh US. Didnt get that because I thought it would be at Duty Free but
instead I saw lots of Sleeman's sub-mediocrity.
On the road around noon. Later than I wanted but had to get some Zs.
Nice terrain, less traffic on 401/403. Almost bucolic.
Near Brantford ON home of #99 his parkway. No info whether one if its eyes is sleepy like his daughter.
More forest like scenery emerges before Hamilton and you are informed
you are in the "Greenbelt" The Earth's merkin?

Finally at Peace Bridge Duty Free. Again, disappointing. Prices high and booze just about the same as NJ
aside from the specials. Bought my wife a nice earrings/necklace set that she didnt really go crazy over.
Got some of this which has seemigly replaced Brador, again at least in On, from Molson.
Its been out a few years, But I drank it at our mini happy hour at work after
a Innis & Gunn Canadian Cherrywood and the combo gave me a swell buzz
So now its 3 and another hot day. Really hungry for lunch 6 hours after waffles and a cup of
cofee. The signs that said 30-60 Min Wait at Lewiston & Niagara Falls and 0-30
min wait @ Peace Bridge LIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truck lane, not well marked, at least an Hour.
Car lane where 3 merge into 1 at least 1/2 hour.
Dint realize it was so small. These 3 lanes are all she wrote.
1/2 hour of crawling later...I cross the Niagara and see hundreds of vehicles in front.
You can count at least 50 ahead if you squint, and thats just in the 3 lanes right in front o' me.
Was this a bad end to a meh day with miles to go before I sleep?
NO! 'Member the EZ-Pass/GOES/NEXUS card I tole you about I have that had its lane closed when I came in at Sarnia?
Because I preregistered for this program by supplying biometrics etc it allows you to cross the border
faster n' an illegal in El Paso wherever its available between America and America's Hat.
I sees the Nexus lane(s) ahead (Prolly coulda went in the 2nd one and flies thru with little questioning
and no duties paid! I'm the International King o' Travel!
On to lunch/dinner....a Buffalonian treasure of sorts...Schwabl's
Over the river and through the Hood to Beef On Weck* I Go...Buffalo skyline in background
*Beef On Weck...Sliced Roast Beast, Hot, Served on a Kummelweck Roll
- a soft Kaiser Roll that has Sea/Kosher Salt Crystals on top with Caraway (sorta like Rye)
seeds..Isthmus be the place..

Thanks for this, JSJ. This vicarious road trip is saving me a lot of money and angst.
I will qualify here - that there are lots of Scotch available at teh DF and sometimes there is pricing and bundling that is very good.
Also, different companies run the DF in different provinces and PQ (Quebec) IMO is better.
Why angst? Under the right conditions, a road trip can be fun. Its all attitude, even when I was driving in the fog fearing for my life
and next to Tractor trailers hauling 20' Feet wide Highway Culverts that would crush me like a bug if they fell off, I was cheerful.

So the sandweedge....I got it Medium but did not specify Thin sliced.
Wonder if this guys last name is Carver?
Now that guy was nice, but the rest - the greeter, the bleached blonde waitress, the guy I paid-all cold, humorless
folks that represent the worst side of my Polish heritage. Not that they werent good people, but no banter, smiles?
Germans maybe? Same with the gal in the Sunoco across the st, where they sell Craft Beer w/ Growlers (THUD!)
Anyway, anyhow, anywhere....you can see the salt & seeds
Good, but maybe there's a better place one of you Western NY guys like.
Time to hit the road. Between the Rite Aid & Sunoco I didnt get outta that intersection for an hour.
Too tired for the Thruway. Made my way to US 20 through East Aurora but didnt want to hit lights all the way to Albany so I went on NY 16.
If I had stayed on that I woulda been good but decided to take NY 39 East, which was a huge mistake as its under cornstruction
and you get rerouted, poorly with NY 78 North in a zig-zag.
Saw lotsa dairy farms: (near Arcade, NY)
Lotsa wind turbines (or was I in Teletubby land?)

Fortunately back to NY 19 South then merge to Interstate 86/17 East. Listened to Jets / Eagles but thru WIP 610 Philly
and not WEPN interestingly. The Giants were very easily available via Elmira/Syracuse stations.
You can guess my way back except do NOT take rt 17 past Binghamton at night because a) Its under construction also
b) The fog is extremely heavy in spots - dangerous to drive IMO. Got home at 1:30 and in bed after unpack at 4.
Got up at 8:30 went to work 12 PM-6:30 PM
Creamy Caesar creator:
Hope you liked my trip, a little.
