The final record is not as important as the way the team is playing in the final half/quarter of the season. Do they end on a positive note where the young players are developing and clearly growing? Do they end on a negative note where Rex has once again lost the locker room?
Agree, they have to show improvement in the last quarter of the season. Two years in row this team as petered out.

That said, I can't put a number of games he'd have to win. As others have said before on this thread, depends on how we end the season. As our HC and with Idzik as GM and MM as our OC I feel confident we'll make the big dance in the next five years. Keep changing our coaching staff as often as some people change socks and we continue to suck indefinitely.
    Good posts. Totally agree

BTW, I think Rex should be given one more year with MM and the new staff and next years additions. To prove he belongs as the long term HC of the NY Jets, no matter what this years win loss record is.

I dont even think he is on the hot seat. Rex has evolved as a HC and is one of the best in the game right now. The FO would be pretty stupid to let him go as the team is finally being finishing the rebuild they started 6 years ago. No more patches to just make the POs this team is in it for the long run. He is exactly what Kubiak was a few years back. If he goes 8-8 he'd be on a pretty good path IMO.

We have some problems, there is no doubt about that.

HC really isn't one of them.

I'm not sure why the media seems intent on running a good coach out of town, but I hope a few early wins can shut up the idiots. If we were any other team, there wouldn't be nearly as much heat on Rex. Media bashing has been covered ad nauseum on this forum, but it really is amazing how differently the Jets are treated than just about all of the 31 other teams. Hopefully the team is as eager to shut them all up as we are. Winning cures all.

we will NEVER be 2 games over 500 IMO unless we finish 9 and 7. Middle schedule is tough.

Does it matter. This team will not win more than 4 games.

Mangini went 9-7 and got canned cus Favre lied about his injury and kept throwing picks. Rex will be fired the day Woody thinks he's hurting the biz.

Yes but if Rex gets fired who do you replace him with? Cowher won't come here, wants too much control. Do you promote Marty-M to HC?

What experienced winning HC do you replace Ryan with if you fire him?

Let's assume for the sake of your argument that Idzik could find somebody skilled and qualified to take over the team.

Rex probably keeps the team even if we are worse than 8-8 as long as the defense is reasonably competitive and the team doesn't have a massive implosion. Rex has put too much involvement in the defense to not have his job largely depend on the defense's performance. He also has to keep the team disciplined. Setting the tone for the players is the HC's job and with a team full of young players you need that discipline. If Rex lets his job this year turn into a mediocre job as a DC in a HC's salary he'll get cut. We'll hire his brother as DC and install somebody else as HC.

However, Rex definitely gets some passes this year on other issues. He can't be blamed for injuries that may occur. There is a new offensive scheme and lots of young players to develop. The team is still haunted by the ghosts of Tanny's contracts. Rex can't magically make the team learn all the plays and work together like installing a new playbook in Madden. These things take time. Idzik is smart enough to understand that and draw the line between what Rex can do and what he can't.

His brother hasnt had a good D and is on his 4th DC job now. His own brother wouldnt hire him. Id maybe take him as a LBs coach nothing more.

What you are saying is that Rex is only a defensive coach and has no responsibility for the offensive mess we have had for the last two years. Yes that make sense, and thats the problem. Refresh my memory--who wanted Tony Sparano?
