Maybe if something's wrong with your fuel gauge.

Maybe if you put diesel in an octane engine (also stupid, but at least you tried).

Maybe if you're trying to evade the law.

Maybe in a post apocalyptic world, where gas is scarce.

You can't put diesel in a regular tank. Diesel has a larger tube on the nozzle and it won't fit in the hole

Never happen the bastards won't let you ever make it that far. I did make it from 17 st to Atlantic ave in south bklyn once via third and fourth. Good times no windshield and a screeching rim.

I've run out of gas a lot when I was young and in the military. And once in the last 10 years.

It happens when you get stuck in the country and you think you havea gallon or two left and then go up a big hill. The gas tank slants and you don't get that extra gallon or two.

I've been luck to mostly being within walking distance of gas stations. In my poor days (military) i would get $3.00 worth of gas or get more if I got guys to chip in. But inevitably on a long trip, miscalculations or a closed gas station resulted in an empty gas tank.

ran out of gas on the verranzano bridge. stalled right on an incline before the tolls, a few more feet i could of rolled to tolls. Had to have a truck come push me. they were going to give me a ticket but then got called to an accident so did not get one

Ive probably ran out of gas 4 or 5 times in my life.
In 2010 i ran out on the howard franklin bridge in tampa. I rolled off onto the shoulder and within 20 minutes a help truck pulled up, threw 2 gallons of gas in for me and refused to take any money from me. Strangely, a year later i once again ran out and woundup in the same exact spot as last time. Im talking exact! 10 minutes go by, here comes thetruck with free gas and off i went

It's a lot easier in the country on a long trip when you for get to look at the guage. Today with the reserve 2 gallons, it's a lot harder but in the 1960s for get about it.

    Once.

I had a motorcycle with no gauge where once the tank was empty you had to manually switch to the reserve tank. From there, I knew how many km I could go before running out. The trick was when you filled up the tank you had to remember to manually switch back to the regular tank, cuz if you forgot, later, once you emptied the tank and go to switch to the reserve..."d'oh! I was already on the reserve!"

I was of course in a highway tunnel at 1 AM.

I had the first one. Was driving my wife's car, and runs out of gas, but the gauge said I had a full quarter tank left.

Otherwise, no. How do you do that?

I haven't run out of gas, but I've come close a few times because of my own stupidity. I like to challenge myself with driving sometimes, so I would look up how much miles my car would go once the fuel light came on, and then calculate if I can make it or not, and cut it close a few times. I'll even pass gas stations with the light on knowing I have say another 10 miles before it's truly empty. Once the light turned from orange to red as I was pulling into a gas station. One of these days it's going to come back and bite me, lol.
