Jets sign Ed Reed - it's official (merged Reed)

    From today's press conference:

    Darryl Slater ‏@DarrylSlater 3m
Rex Ryan said "it's safe to say, yes" when asked if he had a conversation with John Idzik about Ed Reed.

    Brian Costello ‏@BrianCoz 6m
Rex asked directly if he wants Ed Reed on the team and he just pauses with no answer.

    Brian Costello ‏@BrianCoz 7m
Rex on Ed Reed: "We're going to look at any player out there that we think can help us." #nyj

I agree. If he has anything left in the tank, Rex will milk it outta him. Love me some Ed Reed. I fear he may be done, but if he can help us and mentor some of the younger guys on the defense, that works for me.

What's the downside? Minimal salary, obvious experience to be shared with the young safeties, adds a little depth at the back end of the rotation. You could have worse people tutoring these kids.

Not if the Jets claim him, he won't. The claim process goes in reverse order
from worst record to best. So if the Jets want him NE could do nothing about it

I don't care if he's lost a step, he'd still instantly become the best cover safety we have as soon as he walks in the door.

He's like an extra coach on the field, knows this defense like the back of his hand, has a great relationship with Rex, and still has a knack for making the big play.

    Oh yeah, and he's cheap.

    Don't see the downside here.

Any idea where we are in line on safety waiver claims? Or when he should clear waivers?

Does a vet of his stature have to go through waivers? I can't imagine him agreeing to go to some team like the Jags.

If Reed ends up with the Pats, that would suck.

I'd be happy if we got him.

Not after brady kicked him in the groin and tried to injure him.

We would also be on the hook for the rest of his salary.

He has to go through waivers since he was released after the trade deadline.

Which is only around $1 million.

Multiple reports saying teams have to put a claim in, so I'm imagining he will have to go through the same process as anyone else.

If its someone he's not happy with he'll probably just retire.

I am not sure how all this takes place but my guess is an interested team would call him to see if he would sign with them if he cleared before they were to put a claim in? This would be a nice add for the stretch run
