    With all this cap space, why not give Mo a HUGE Roster bonus (not signing bonus) in 2014 as part of a long term deal, and then have that money disappear off the cap number immediately for the future?

    Say he gets a 6 year $60 million deal, with a $15 million roster bonus in 2014 (roster bonuses are not spread out). Then we are basically spreading out only $45 million over 6 years - seems like a good way to keep his cap number down in a year where we have the space.

    Why do people just want to throw boat loads of cash at people when there is no need to? Revis got a lot of extra up front money too, and then held out due to his convenient memory loss with regard to his extra upfront money for a lower number later. Not to say Mo is Revis but why don't some of you learn? There is no need to give Mo extra money just for the hell of it this year. He's already a star, so it isn't like we'd get a discount because he's an unknown talent.

    Wow we really have a special player who is going to become GREAT. We struck gold.
    Wilkerson is a great dude. Wish we had more players like him.

    Wish there were more players like him in the NFL for that matter.

    If anyone is interested Mo is hosting a casino night on Friday, May 30 at The Space at Westbury in Long Island NY. Log on to Eventbrite.com and search Muhammad Wilkerson Team 96 event.

    I've been to a few of his charity events before and most of the NYJ defensive players show up to support him. Great chance for fans to meet the players in a social setting and talk Jet football. (-;

    Wanting to be a jet for life means that this place is his first choice. Nowhere did he say that if another team offered him more that he wouldn't go. Revis was the same. He wanted to be here, but he isn't going to take less just because he wants to be here.

    Since I invested in a Mo Wilk authentic, I hope he does.

    Well he is from the area so who knows maybe he would do a hometown discount within reason.. I agree for 90% of the players it's all about the money but even Randy Moss took a huge pay cut to go to the Pats.. And Brady after the 3 bowl wins could have had more money going someplace else..

    I agree with this. I feel like some guys will take the discounts toward the end of their career if they either have been there all their career and haven't won a Super Bowl. Hope he does stay here for a very long time.

    What my take from Big Mo statement is , the type of players we are filling our locker room with. A strong leader who is not afraid to say what he feels, regardless of the positive or negative affect it will have on his contract negotiations. Personally I feel if the Jets offer him a FAIR long term deal, Mo will take it and set the tone for others to consider staying as well.
    While others may disagree with me, it is my belief that this kind of attitude among some players, is directly related to having Rex as our head coach.

    MO is a great young player-I hope the Jets do right by him as the NFL players career can be a very short one-I dont blame a player for wanting to get paid even Revis-teams have no loyalty back to the players and fans jump ship on your right away if you struggle even for one year(see Cro as an example of this)-a great jet that gave his heart for the team and played hurt) his reward a good amount of fans were happy to see him leave after one injury plagued tough season

    I feel for military people that get hurt and work wounded not millionaire players, some of which have kids in every state of the union.. And I liked Cro and wish him well I just don't feel sorry for him..

    These days good players get 2 shots at big deals. But the fact is the only "really big" money comes with that first contract after the rookie deal expires. By the time that 3nd deal comes around the player, no matter how good he's been, is now 30,31, and it isn't about how much more he can make, but more about maintaining as much of his earning power as possible. But in the end usually that 2nd deal is for a lot less than the first.

    So with a good player like Wilkerson there is always a risk when you let him actually get to FA, even a player who is a home town guy who likes where he lives and the team he plays for. That's why the Jets should get something done before it happens. By all accounts he's willing to give that "hometown discount", but that doesn't mean you can get him on the cheap. For a player with the all around skills of Wilkerson, top 5 money with half guaranteed should do the trick. The "discount" part is that he wouldn't be looking to be the highest paid DLman, but I'm sure he doesn't want to be the 6th highest paid either.

    BOTTOM LINE: it would be much easier to do it this year. The Jets have a lot of cap money to spend so you wouldn't need to back load it. Plus it would be a great message to send to your locker room, that deserving guys like Wilkerson will be taken care of.
