Border Fence Plan Riles Environmentalists

Fox News, Wednesday, December 03, 2003

LOS ANGELES Environmentalists in California are trying to block a federal plan to build a new security fence to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States from Mexico.

The 14-mile fence would accompany an existing 40-mile fence that has been credited with causing a massive drop in illegal border crossings since its construction in 1993.

Supporters of the fence say that the increasing number of terrorists who are at large means the United States must be even more vigilant at its borders.

But environmentalists argue that the construction of a fence would disrupt the local ecosystem, cause erosion problems and damage the area where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tijuana River , now inhabited by rare birds and insects.

The dispute could pit the California Coastal Commission against the will of the White House, which has the authority to overrule the state body, but could find itself in a legal fight.

i dunno about any effect on the ecosystem but it looks to me like

yet another cockamamie scheme carried out in the name of "national security"

oh by the way Come Back to NY its not the libs who are scared of losing voters its the GOPers scared of losing gardiners and kitchen staff.

So what's the democrat plan to stop or slow illegals then?

Free food, free clothes, free education and water fountains in every desert. That will surely stop the influx OR how about just do nothing.

You guys are ridiculous. No Patriot Act, no attempt to secure the borders and certainly NO preemptive strikes.

This is just as ridiculous as not drilling for our own oil until we raise the minimum MPG.
