Thread: The Rights Reaction to a PRO-WAR Democrat

1. #1
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A pro-military Democratic congressman's description of the war in Iraq as "unwinnable" unless changes are made sparked anger in House Republicans Thursday.

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pennsylvania, in a news conference with Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said the problems in Iraq are due to a "lack of planning" by Pentagon chiefs and "the direction has got be changed or it is unwinnable."

Republicans seized on that word, ignoring Murtha's overall point: that more troops and equipment should be sent to Iraq.

Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, the majority leader, accused Murtha of participating in a "calculated and craven political stunt."

"The Democrats are quitting, calling the war unwinnable while we have our men and women and their families sacrificing every day" charged Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Texas, who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Democrats are "basically giving aid and comfort to the enemy," echoed Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas.

Murtha usually wins high praise from Republicans for regularly supporting increases to the Pentagon's budget. As the top defense appropriator in his party, his views tend to carry a lot of weight.

But the word "unwinnable" -- which greeted lawmakers Thursday morning above the fold in the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call -- quickly became a Republican target.

Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-California, who chairs the appropriations' defense subcommittee, said his friend was co-opted by Pelosi so she could drum up opposition to the war she voted against.

He said it was part of "movement" by Pelosi and her strategists "because it could have an impact on election time."

She's "using the issue for purely campaign political purposes," Lewis said.

At the news conference, Pelosi said Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld should resign because of his handling of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

"He has been engaged in a cover-up on this issue and continues to be," she said.

Murtha complained that the administration treats Congress "with absolute arrogance" but said he doesn't want Rumsfeld to resign.

He also said he does not think the United States should withdraw from Iraq. Rather, he said, more troops and supplies should be sent.

"We cannot prevail in this war with the policy we have today. We need to mobilize or get out," he said.

"It would be devastating to pull out now, but it may be impossible to mobilize now that the public has turned against it," he said.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, a guy (Democrat) who BACKS the War, votes to FUND the War, APPROVES of the WAR and wants to WIN the war gets the crap slammed out of him by Right-Wingers because he wants to send MORE TROOPS to Iraq?

Any right wingers want to explain THAT one to me?

I think that's probably why they were upset.

Nice quote for our troops to hear, yah the left isn't undermining our efforts over there

And if it weren't for the left in this country taking to the streets and crying about the rights of our enemy, we'd easily kick their a$$ with overwhelming force. But no we must tread ligthly so we don't offend our enemy both here and over seas. How dare we attack a mosque where there are fighters holed up taking shots at our soldiers.

The problem is the man is standing there with Nancy(the socialist) Pelosi saying the war is unwinnable. If he wanted to advise sending more troops he should do just that. His comments are politically motivated.

I think you are missing the obvious point. This guy WANTS to win the war and WANTS to do it the right way, the way we should be doing it. MASSIVE FORCE and UNSTOPPABLE POWER!

Why are we half-assing it? If we continue to half-ass it the war IS unwinnable!

We didn't half ass WWI or WWII and we won both times. We half-assed it (at least, the givernment did) in Korea, Vietnam and now BOTH Iraq wars.....and see what happened.

IF we are going to fight this war, lets FIGHT IT like we mean it.

Unstoppable Force. Dominate and Control. Kill those who then continue to fight.

Then get our boys (and girls these days) HOME!

Oh the irony. lol:

The left wanting to use OVERWHELMING FORCE. Yah and once we do, they'll cry about civilian casualties and bombing of mosques's etc etc etc.

Don't be so naive.

*sigh*

If every Democrat, Muscician, Leftist, Hippie and Abortionist in the USA suited up, went to Iraq and DIED fighting the war you would STILL claim they had ulterior motives and political misdeeds behind their actions.

It sure seems that it doesn't matter to you WHAT someone does, but only what PARTY they belong to.

Not true Joe Leiberman is a great democrat a guy I listen to and respect .

He's honest, has conviction and would be a good president. I would have no problem voting for the man.

Pope, is it possible that you open up your narrow mind a tiny bit to see that perhaps sending a lot more troops & firepower is actually the right thing to do?

No one would want to see Iraq turned into a parking lot more than me. However listening to the left cry about us using overwhelming force would just be too much.

You really think the left in this country would go for us absolutely destroying that country if that's what it took to get the job done?

Come back to reality.

You miss the point, my friend. Zell Miller is a democrat too. If he ran for president in 4 years against John McCain, Zell Miller would get my vote because he is more conservative!

Party is meaningless to me. I favor the GOP because they are more conservative than dems as a whole.

And Pope is correct. We could bomb iraq to smithereens in five hours and take their friggin oil if we so chose. But libs are flipping because some captured iraqi murdering thug was force to wear panties on his head or a leash around his neck. So, when these thugs fight behind a group of women and children, it makes GI Joe's job a little harder.

Overwhelming force would mean overwhelming collateral damage, and besides it's unnecessary -- the war's over and we won -- iraq just needs some cleanup at this point.

While I wish this were true, I think there would be 700 (and counting) DEAD American Heros who might disagree with you about that.

You don't lose that many American Soldiers in "Cleanup" duty. You lose them if there is still combat to be had.

I don't suggest bombing everything willy nilly. BUt I do suggest MASSIVE FORCE, thousands MORE troops than what we have there now, more aggressive tactics and more WILL to fight from our Politicians.

C'mon soldiers are dying because these cowards plant a roadside bomb and leave or drive a carload of TNT into a Humvee. It's not combat. How many gunfights have taken place recently. And what's the result of those that have?

More troops standing around means more targets for these kinds of attacks, which mean MORE casualties, correct?

I guess I'm wrong because Baghdad Bob the Jets Fan union thugs and dan rather tell him what to believe.

I guess my "cause" is for America to succeed. I'd say sue me, but being the good little lefty he is, he'd probably try.

Rebel Fighters are able to do this because US Forces have yet to flush them out and kill them. One reason is manpower. We don't have enough there to adequately flush out these attackers. More troops, used aggressively, would enable US Forces to better flush areas of known rebel fighters.
