Call Columbia
a poisoned Ivy

Students rip profs as anti-Semitic

BY DOUGLAS FEIDEN
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

It's one of America's greatest universities - and it has been the pride of New York City since its founding in 1754.

But Columbia University now is roiled by mounting charges of anti-Zionism, anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism.

A dozen students yesterday described a Hate U-on-the-Hudson in which top professors compare Jews to Nazis and mock or bully students who defend Israel's right to exist. In interviews with the Daily News and in a controversial student documentary, they told how Morningside Heights has become a haven for academic bias and intimidation from professors and fellow students.

How ugly does it get? Posters for an Israeli film festival are defaced with swastikas. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is compared to Hitler. Israeli soldiers are branded rapists.

In the 24-minute film, "Columbia Unbecoming," which has not been publicly released, inflammatory language directed at Jewish students is portrayed as a part of the Columbia experience.

Example No. 1: Joseph Massad, a tenure-track professor of modern Arab politics, who allegedly said Palestinians are the "new Jews," Jews are the "new Nazis" and Israel is a "racist state" with no right to exist as a Jewish state.

Massad, who did not return calls, is described as repeatedly refusing to answer a question from Tomy Schoenfeld, an Israeli student and military veteran. Instead, he demands of his student, "How many Palestinians have you killed?"

"This is outright hate speech and a scar on the reputation of Columbia," said Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn). "The only way it can be healed is to fire this professor."

Responding to the film, Columbia President Lee Bollinger said in a statement that "because of the disturbing and offensive nature of the incidents described," he had asked Alan Brinkley, the university's provost, to investigate.

Columbia is "committed to the core principle of academic freedom," he said. "But that principle is not unlimited. ... It does not, for example, extend to protecting behavior in the classroom that threatens or intimidates students who express their viewpoints."

The documentary, produced by The David Project, a pro-Israel group in Boston, includes an account by Lindsay Shrier, 24, about a debate she had with George Saliba, a professor of Islamic civilization, outside his classroom.

"You have no claim to the land of Israel. You have no voice in this debate," she said Saliba told her. "You have green eyes. You're not a Semite. I have brown eyes. I'm a Semite."

Shrier, who graduated last year, told The News she was horrified and felt intimidated. "He acted as if having green eyes disconnected me from the land of my ancestors," she said.

"I refuse to comment on a film I have not seen," Saliba said.

The documentary focuses on Columbia's Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures Department, saying its chairman, Hamid Dabashi, advocates "dismantling the Zionist entity." Dabashi did not return a call.

Prior to the war there was a Prof. at Columbia, Nick DeGrovna, who, at an anti-war rally in the school. He proceeded to say he hoped American troops in Iraq would experience "1000 Mogadishu's".

His words were so vile the President of Columbia came out and publicly distanced himself from them...worse for DeGrovna his home address and phone number were published on a web-site.....so I gave him a call.

"Prof Chico" as I referred to him (he is in charge of the Latin department at Columbia) called me a coward and I offered him the opportunity to prove his words...he then told me "the NY police are monitoring your call and will come after you!"..I responded saying, (remeber this is 2/2003) "with the financial crunch NYC is experiencing if you think the NYCPD was spending two-seconds protecting your ass then you really are a fool!"

I gave him an opportunity....in March, Columbia actually held a "support our troops, support the war rally"...I told him I would be at the rally with a sign directed towards him so he could confront me.

I went to the rally with my anti-DeGrovna sign on a miserable, drizzly day and no one showed up or bothered me....seems like its' time to go back with a new sign!

I have a buddy that plays baseball there and basically said its a Socialist haven. He called me one day to tell me they were having a socialist rally at the school and burning pictures of Bush. Crazy stuff.

There is some truth to that statement.

That is a backhanded racist remark.

CBTY, you take this stuff a little too far, I see you as a miltia man in a few years living off the grid waiting for helter skelter.

The funny thing is he is proud of it.

I'm no angel myself. This one time I was driving on I395 into DC and I was behind this guy who had all these Bush, pro-life, etc... stickers all over his car. So I passed him and pulled infront of him. I was nearing the 14th ST bridge but I was going to take the left exit onto the GW parkway right beofre the bridge. The left turn is very abrupt (VA roadways are the worst I've ever seen, no merge areas, stupid hills, etc....) So anyway I purposely waited till the last second to slowdown and make the turn, the guy behind me almost got rearended.

I'm not proud of that.

Damn straight I am...it's one thing to sit on a message board and ***** yet another to act on convictions against those you dislike when the opportunity arise...and if what I did, standing up against someone who publicly states he wishes "1000 Mogadishu's" on the men and women in our military, is taking it a bit to far tough then tough ah!t....its' a ***** when someone is held accountable for their words/actions and the left has gotten away with it for 40-years..

OH I get it! So when someone stands up against a misleading and ill-informed Government that launched an unjustified War of Aggression (Pre-Emption, the New Way!) that actually SENT those American soldiers you speak of to a far away land to die for some amorphous "War on Terror" or for the freedom of a people who happily refused to fight for it themselves for 100 years, you support that kind of brave action......I get it now!

You are right on two counts. The professor IS a scumbag, and it IS a ***** when someone is held accountable for their actions. Sadly, G.W. Bush will never have to feel that accountabillity for his errors, mistakes, poor planning, overspending and failures.

"Standing up against government" = wishing for our soldiers to die by the millions?

Dissent is fine, Fisher. But couching anything that a person says as being virtuous, like "standing up against injustice" is absurd. This guy openly rooted for our boys to die. It has NOTHING to do with Bush. F*ck this guy. I wish Come Back would have kicked his a$$, video-taped it, and posted a link. That's not my style, and I tend not to be that confrontational (outside of message boards ;) ) and yeah, CBTNY seems like a really active, involved guy, maybe even an aggressive guy. But so what?? But you never give him credit for anything philosophically. You ridicule him, and always couch his opponent's views in their best light possible, with nice, sweet, generic rationalizations like "standing up against (insert injustice here)." CBTNY is standing up for what he believes in, and he is putting his money where his mouth is. He goes to rallies, holds people accountable for their actions, holds signs, protests things he disagrees with, publicly supports things he agrees with, etc. He called this guy, and didn't let him get away with saying such horrible things (my opinion). Just because he supports the current administration doesn't de-value that. Just because he is opinionated doens't de-value that. Just because he consents instead of dissents doesn't de-value that. But no, you project YOUR OPINION about the administration and this war and act as if that is an important aspect fo your ostensibly objective analysis. "Someone who stands up to injustices, blah blah blah." They are injustices in YOUR OPINION. CBTNY is standing up to an injustice, in HIS opinion, which is this guy's wish to see millions of soldiers perish.

We have freedom of speech, and speech has consequences. This guy isn't sitting in a jail cell for what he said, and he shouldn't be. But getting a well-deserved a$$-whoopin' is a different story.

Keep on keeping it real, CBTNY!

Really, I'm not all that surprised. I see that kind of stuff at rutgers alot. There are a lot of radical left wingers in this area, and basically you'll find that at any college. Last year we had the jews on one side of college ave, israeli flags everywhere. They had a live band set up with a stage, food, everything you can think of. Then on the other side of college ave... directly across the street...you could see all of the muslims with the palestinian flags. They tried to hand me some kind of flyer as I was walking to class, I promptly tore it in half as soon as she gave it to me. Tired of people pushing their views on me, no thanks. But this thing about columbia really isnt a shock, considering most colleges are like this. I had a professor who openly said he was a socialist, and urged us to join the socialist club. I had another professor for expos writing that was a feminist lesbian, and proclaimed all of the people at Gitmo were non-combatants. george bush and his "stupid war", as she would put it. Really inappropriate comments for the classroom, but thats what ya have to expect at these places...after all its new jersey, and theres alot of weird people here to begin with.
