    Actress: 9/11 our fault

    By MAGGIE HABERMAN
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

    Maggie Gyllenhaal
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, star of a new flick about the aftermath of 9/11, believes the United States "is responsible in some way" for the devastating terror attacks.

Gyllenhaal, 27, made the comments at the Tribeca Film Festival, where her new movie "The Great New Wonderful" - which has a plot centered on the destruction of the World Trade Center - premiered Friday.

"I think what's good about the movie is that it deals with 9/11 in such a subtle, open way that I think it allows it to be more complicated than just, 'Oh, look at these poor New Yorkers and how hard it was for them,'" Gyllenhaal told the NY1 cable channel.

"Because I think America has done reprehensible things and is responsible in some way and so I think the delicacy with which it's dealt allows that to sort of creep in," she added.

A lower East Side native, Gyllenhaal's new film focuses on a handful of New Yorkers coping with their pain about a year after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror strike.

The 27-year-old vaulted to stardom after appearing in "Secretary" as a mousy assistant.

The film festival where Gyllenhaal spoke was launched by actor Robert De Niro in 2002 as a way to help scarred lower Manhattan rebound.

I remember still being able to smell the WTC in Brooklyn and a girl told me the same thing, she alluded to American atrocities all over the globe. Of course, like Gyllenhaal, she couldn't cite anything specific - just the "corporate structure thing" as she put it. As pathetic a notion then as it is now.

    clueless

btw, it makes me sick that this tragedy is now about to become open game for nauseating dramas played out by actors that have no idea of the pain associated with that day

According to her bio, she's the stereotypical hardcore Hollyweird liberal; plus she graduated from Columbia. And again like most other liberals, she's pretty - pretty fugly. :D

I suppose the beheaded hostages in iraq deserved their fate because swords are made from steel and America is the #1 steel exporter in the world.

To say this is to COMPLETELY misunderstand why 9/11 occurred and also completely misunderstand Islam and Islamic extremists. It's sad, really, that she could be so blind. It's appalling that she uses her "fame" to voice an opinion that is so misled and ignorant.

    Verbally? Yes.

    Physically? No.

She's a foolish doofus, to be sure. But how can we criticise her? She is using two of America's biggest freedoms: The freedom to speak your mind (no matter how ignorant or emptyheaded you are) and the freedom to persue happiness (by being a movie star that millions of Americas feel is worth watching, right or wrong).

WE, the people of the USA, put her where she is. WE educated her. WE raised her. WE pay her insane amounts of $$ to watch her on screen playoing make believe.

We have no one else to blame is she is what she is.

Hollywood produces atrocities like porn an "american idol".

Does that justify blowing up her house?

Is she not suposed to think, or speak? Its her right.

CBTNY why wouldn't you engage in a dialouge instead of "verabally accosting" her? Are you capable?

    Quick make a sign.

She can say whatever she wants, it is her right...just as it is anybody elses right to take her to task on what she said- just as it is your right to sit behind your keyboard and be an internet tough guy who never follows through on threats.

Quick- challenge/threaten someone else who posts with words you can't back-up! ;)

Of course she CAN speak. She can say whatever she wants to. I just wish she'd educate herself a little more on what she thinks she's so passionate about. Otherwise you come across like Ward Churchill... or worse... like JetsMetsIsles. jk
