September 10th, 2003

Although the team has not officially announced the signing as of this morning, various wire reports confirm that Bates has been inked. Bates (510-215 Lbs) is an 11 year veteran has played with Seattle, Cleveland, Carolina and Washington. After moving from Carolina to Washington in 2001, he re-signed back with the Panthers in 2002 where he broke his ankle and was on injured reserve all of last season. He re-signed with Carolina this past winter but was released during the final cuts of training camp.

Bates is an excellent special teams player who has made the Pro Bowl five times as a kick returner during his career. He is a definite upgrade over Johnson, even at 34.
