Inside the numbers: The Jets are trying for their 10th win in 11 games against Miami. The Dolphins haven’t beaten the Jets at the Meadowlands since1997. Jets are home dogs on the wager line with Miami being favored by 3 points. The over under of the game is 37 points.

Herm Friday quotes:

On the progress of DE Shaun Ellis: “He (Ellis) has paid his dues. He is probably the most consistent guy on defense now. You saw that in the summer, in the pre-season games and now he is doing that in the games. The more he plays that way, the more confident he becomes and he will play that way on defense. He is a tremendously talented guy. He has a lot of ability. He is enjoying playing and I am hoping that eventually he will be one of the leaders on defense. He has leadership ability and hopefully if he keeps playing well he will step up to that role as well.

On what Ellis has done to get to where he is: “Obviously his weight is down. He has more confidence with what we are asking him to do and he understands what we are asking him to do better. He understands what type of player he is. He is not like John. He is a more physical, dominant guy and is starting to use that in his rushing. I am not saying he is not fast, but he has the ability to be a powerful rush guy. He has the ability to push them back where John is not trying to do that. He is trying to speed them off the end and he is starting to understand how he can get to the quarterback. It takes guys some time to do that and he is figuring it out.”

On if he likes the friendly sack competition between Ellis and John Abraham (who both had two sacks last week): “Only if we stop the run. A lot of teams do that. They get into the friendly sack deal and then give up 150 yards against the run. That’s not good. As long as we stop the run and get after the quarterback, that is great competition.”

On the team’s mindset after ten days rest and a week of practice: The mindset is good. We are not going to worry about how the other team feels. We are going to feel how we feel and I think it is more important that we understand what we have to get done. It’s a good football team and it will be a good game. We will see what happens Sunday.
