The New York Jets fell to 0-3 today, losing to the New England Patriots 23-16. The Jets running game once again could not get rolling (65 yards for the game), leaving it up to the arm of Vinny Testaverde to carry an unfair share of the offensive load.

The Jets had ample opportunities to take the game, but were hampered by dropped passes on both sides of the ball. Curtis Conway (stats) had 3 drops on the day, one of them a sure touchdown on a drive that saw the Jets settle for a field goal. Safety Sam Garnes and linebacker Sam Cowart each dropped gift-wrapped interceptions, both of which looked returnable for touchdowns. Cowarts missed opportunity came deep in Patriots territory with seven minutes remaining and the Jets down by a lone touchdown.

The Jets left even more points on the field when a wide open Wayne Chrebet stepped on the sideline (and nullified the play) before hauling in a perfectly placed Testaverde TD lob, and when Herm Edwards gambled and had holder Dan Stryzynski attempt a pass to center Kevin Mawae on a fake field goal attempt. The pass fell incomplete.

The teams traded field goals in the first half, ending the first 30 minutes with a 9-9 tie. The Patriots took the lead early in the third quarter when, after a pass interference call on Jets' cornerback Ray Mickens gave the Patriots the ball at the Jets' one yard line, Pats' quarterback Tom Brady (15/25, 181 yds,. 0 TD, 0 Int.) ran it in himself on first down.

On the Jets next possession, Testaverde (25/43, 264 yds., 1 TD, 1 Int.) threw a crushing pick that was returned 55 yards for a touchdown by the Pats' Asante Samuels. While the Jets QB atoned for the play on the ensuing possession, moving the Jets 68 yards in 4 plays and capping the drive with a 29 yard touchdown pass to Chrebet, the Jets offense sputtered for the rest of the day.

The Jets were a horrid 1 for 13 on third down conversions, and have now scored only 3 offensive touchdowns in 3 games. On defense, the Jets once again showed an inability to stuff the run, giving up 147 yards on the ground. A notable on the day was defensive end Sean Ellis recording his fourth sack of the season, matching his total for last season after only 3 games. The Jets sacked Brady five times.

Vinny Testaverde moved into eighth place on the all time yardage list, passing Johnny Unitas.
