Herm to stay committed to running Curtis

September 24th, 2003
Despite having a running attack that has been less than stellar during the first three games this season, Coach Edwards is confident things will turn around if they keep pounding the ball. The Tuna also had some comments today on his former team and particularly on the talk that Curtis Martin may be in decline. Despite having a running attack that has been less than stellar during the first three games this season, Coach Edwards is confident things will turn around if they keep pounding the ball. The Tuna also had some comments today on his former team and particularly on the talk that Curtis Martin may be in decline.

“Obviously, we got to stay more committed to it.” Was Edward’s response when he was asked today about the Jets lagging running game. The Coach feels that one of the reasons Curtis Martin has not had a good start is that the team has not given him enough carries. However, he promises that Curtis will have many more opportunities to carry the ball from this game on. “You have to just stick with it (the running game), no matter what happens. If you stick with it long enough, you'll see some fruits of your labor.”

Edwards shrugged off stories in today’s NY Post and Star Ledger that Vinny Testaverde is a loss or two away from being replaced by rookie Brooks Bollinger as complete nonsense. For those that missed it, Post Jets beat writer Mark Cannizarro reported through his sources within the team that Bollinger will replace Testaverde as the starter if the team’s skid continues for another game or two. He went on to say “you can bet your mortgage payment” that Bollinger will be under center for the Jets in Houston on October 19th if the team loses it’s next two games. Star Ledger reporter Dave Hutchinson reported a similar story but cited no sources to back it up. The talk on radio shows today is that the story may have been placed by sources within the organization as a way to get some fire under the team. Jets Insider.com spoke with Bollinger today and he told us that he didn’t see the stories and seemed very surprised by them. Bollinger went on to say that he is grasping the offense a little more with each practice, but the intricacies of it could take years to perfect. Not really what you want to hear from someone that may be thrown to the wolves.

Coach Parcells spoke to the NY Media today and said he was looking forward to coming back to the Meadowlands again. He went on to say that he felt the Jets had the talent and leadership to turn things around and make a playoff run even at 0-3. Although several impact players from his regime are still on the team, he gave credit to Coach Edwards for the team’s success since he left. He spoke very highly of Testaverde and thought he had the work ethic and physical tools to play for several more seasons. Parcells laughed off the talk that his former Goldenboy Curtis Martin may have lost a step. “When ever you guys up there are tired of him (Martin), just send him down here. We’ll take him in a second” said the Tuna.

On the injury front, DE John Abraham (hamstring) was upgraded from questionable to probable. LB Jason Glenn is still questionable with a sore ankle and Dan Stryzinski (ribs) is feeling much better and no longer on the injury list.
