Jets shuffle roster

With the secondary reeling from injuries the Jets today signed two defensive backs and waived two players to make room. One player waived, a two year veteran on the defensive line.

The Jets announced today the following roster moves: The Club has signed free agent cornerback Ray Green and safety David Young from the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns to the active roster, and waived defensive tackle Alan Harper and cornerback Leonard Myers. The Jets also signed cornerback Omare Lowe to the practice squad and released running back Keith Burnell from the practice squad.

Green, a 6-3, 195-pound cornerback, is a fourth-year player out of the University of South Carolina. He entered the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2000 with the Carolina Panthers and has played in 28 games in three-plus seasons. Green spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons with the Miami Dolphins and signed with the New York Giants in March of this year before being waived on October 7. The native of Queens, New York has recorded three tackles on defense and 19 stops on special teams in his career.

Young was a sixth round selection (179th overall) of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2003 NFL Draft. The 6-1, 209-pound safety was waived by the Jaguars at the end of their training camp and has been a member of the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad since signing with them on September 13, 2003. The Columbia, South Carolina native played in 57 collegiate games for Division I-AA power Georgia Southern, recording 289 career tackles, 10 interceptions, six forced fumbles and blocked six kicks. Young was twice named to the I-AA All-American team and was a part of two national championship teams.

Lowe is a 6-1, 195-pound cornerback from the University of Washington in his second season in the NFL. The Seattle, Washington native was a fifth round (161st overall) selection of the Miami Dolphins in the 2002 Draft. Lowe played in one game during his rookie year with Miami and was waived following their 2003 training camp. He spent time on the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans earlier in the 2003 campaign.

Harper, a 6-1, 285-pound defensive tackle, was the Jets’ fourth round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, the 121st overall selection. The former Fresno State Bulldog was inactive for all 16 games in his rookie year and the first five games of the 2003 season as well.

Myers is a third-year player out of the University of Miami who spent his first two seasons with the New England Patriots. The 5-10, 196-pound cornerback first signed to the Jets’ practice squad on September 18 and then to the active roster on September 30. The native of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida recorded two tackles and a pass defense in his lone game on the Jets’ active roster. He suffered a shoulder injury against Buffalo and has reached an injury settlement with the Club.

Burnell, 5-11, 205-pound running back, was signed to the practice squad on September 30, 2003.broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in May 2003 with the Green Bay Packers. The Chesapeake, Virginia native broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in May 2003 with the Green Bay Packers.
