Evans Reinstated

November 4th, 2003
As expected, Jets DT Josh Evans was reinstated by the NFL after serving a 9 week suspension for a drug related offense.

Jets Insider.com has learned that suspended DT Josh Evans was reinstated today by the NFL after serving a nine week drug related suspension.

Evans was at the Jets facility today, met with both Coach Herm Edwards and GM Terry Bradway and will resume practicing with the team tomorrow. Rookie DT Dewayne Robertson and veteran DT Chester McGlockton have been subbing for Evans during his suspension.

This was Evans’ third drug suspension in his career. He served the other two while a member of the Tennessee Titans.

It’s not yet known if Evans will play this week but he has been privately working out in Florida and reportedly is in decent shape. The Jets could definitely use his run stopping abilities which have been the team’s Achilles’ heal all season.

WR Wayne Chrebet re-aggravated his sore back and also now has a sore neck as well. He is scheduled to be tested today and is listed questionable for Sunday. LB Mo Lewis (hip), who didn’t dress for the Giants game, is now probable for Sunday.

CB Donnie Abraham (shoulder) and S Jon McGraw are still out for this week’s game. They may be ready to go against the Colts nest week. DE John Abraham is also out.

KR Michael Bates' days with Gang Green may be numbered. He broke two metacarpals in his right hand on Sunday and will need to wear a cast for several weeks. He can suit up but cannot return kicks. Being that returning kicks is the reason he was signed, the Jets may offer Bates an injury settlement and release him. In the meantime, WR Jonathan Carter will take his place.

Raider QB’s Rich Gannon (shoulder) and backup Marquis Tuiasosopo (knee) are both doubtful for the upcoming Jets/Raiders matchup at Network Associates Coliseum this Sunday and Raiders Coach Bill Callahan today confirmed that former Jets QB Rick Mirer will likely get the nod as the starter. Mirer has bounced around the league his whole 11 year career and got his first playing time last week since 2001. While subbing for the injured Tuiasosopo in a loss Detroit, Mirer completed 15 of 28 passes for 125 yards with 0 TD’s and 2 INT’s. His QB rating was 35.5. While with the Jets in 1999 Mirer was awful subbing for injured QB Vinny Testaverde and was finally replaced by Ray Lucas.

The only other QB the Raiders have is former Steeler Tee Martin, who is on the practice squad will likely be elevated before Sunday. It’s gotten so bad in Oakland that WR Ronald Curry is now listed on the depth chart behind Mirer.
