Duped by the Redskins again
January 7th, 2004
Just when you thought the Jets were close to locking up a quality defensive coordinator in Gregg Williams, it seems that the evil empire in DC might have just pick-pocketed Gang Green again. Just when you thought the Jets were close to locking up a quality defensive coordinator in Gregg Williams, it seems that the evil empire in DC might have just pick-pocketed Gang Green again.

News all over the wires this morning are that Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder has lured former Redskins’ Head Coach Joe Gibbs out of retirement to coach the team for a second tenure. An announcement confirming the deal is expected today. Gibbs retired as Washington’s coach in 1992 and has been the head of a NASCAR team since then.

Furthermore, Jay Glazer of Sportline.com is reporting today that Snyder and Gibbs have already made a deal with Williams to coach the ‘Skins defense. Williams interviewed with the Jets on Friday and there was speculation that an offer was very close.

If the stories are true it seems like the ‘Skins are picking up where they left off last off-season when they raided the Jets roster after signing WR Laveranues Coles, G Randy Thomas, RB Chad Morton and K John Hall. Despite the signings Washington stumbled to a 5-11 record and a 3rd place finish in the NFC East.

If Williams is indeed off the market, look for the Jets to make a big push to land Bucs defensive line and assistant coach Rod Marinelli. The Jets have been trying to get permission to interview Marinelli but have not yet gotten the green light by Tampa. Word is that they will not decide whether to let Marinelli interview anywhere until a new general manager is hired. Jets assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum interviewed for the position on Monday and reportedly is the leading candidate for the job at this point.
