The Marinelli incident represents another black eye to the Jets after the team was spurned by Gregg Williams last week. According to the Jets, an interview of Marinelli was imminent as soon as the Bucs hired a new GM.
Not so fast.
Tampa denied that they ever gave the Jets permission to interview Marinelli and that decision was solely up to the new GM. Well guess what? Allen was named new Tampa’s new GM and he says no dice. Marinelli is staying put.
Now the Jets are scrambling to plan C which seems to be Titans’ LB and former Chief’s Head Coach Gunther Cunningham. Cunningham is a highly respected tenured NFL Coach and has ties to both Jets GM Terry Bradway and Coach Herm Edwards from their KC days. Cunningham is scheduled to meet with the Jets today. The team also wants to speak to Eagles LB Coach Ron Rivera but can’t do so until the Eagles’ season is over. Being that there has been talk that Cunningham is also a candidate for the open Falcons DC position under Jim Mora Jr., the Jets may offer him the job today.
If Cunningham is hired, look for the Jets to offer former Giants DC Johnny Lynn the job as secondary coach. The team already hired former Giants DL coach Denny Marcin on Friday. Cunningham may also look to bring a few more assistants from Tennessee.
Jets Insider.com has also learned that the team will announce a two year extension of Herm Edward’s contract as early as today.
