Jets extend Hermís contract

As expected, the Jets today announced they have given Head Coach Herm Edwards a two year contract extension. Also...Has a new defensive coordinator candidate emerged? As expected, the Jets today announced they have given Head Coach Herm Edwards a two year contract extension.

Despite finishing with a 6-10 record, the teamís worse since Rich Kotite was coach, the Jets showed their committment to Edwards by giving him a two year extension. With two years remaining on his current deal, the extension means that Edwards is signed through the 2007 season.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed but Edwardsí current contract pays him around $1.3MM annually. Itís speculated that the team felt that it would be difficult to attract premium free agents and assistant coaches if Edwardsí contract status wasnít solidified.

The Jets have still not hired a defensive coordinator. However, a late candidate has seemed to emerge. Ken Berger of Newsday is reporting that the team will to speak with University of Nebraska defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. Pelini, 36, was a candidate to take the head coaching job at Nebraska after Frank Solich was let go. However, recently fired Raiders head coach Bill Callahan got the job instead. Pelini runs a similar defense as the Jets and is an aggressive play caller. All qualities Edwards is looking for.

Pelini is reportedly meeting with the Jets today and if he doesnít get the job here, he will likely join Bob Stoops in Oklahoma.
