Word is coming out today that the Jets offered the Redskins three veteran players for All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey. Unfortunately, reports say that Washington is more intrigued by Denver’s offer of RB Clinton Portis for Bailey.

Both ESPN and the Denver Post are reporting that the Jets offered DE Shaun Ellis, TE Anthony Becht and RB Lamont Jordan for the rights to Bailey. The Denver Post reported that the Jets deal also included more return compensation including RB Ladell Betts and Washington’s 2nd round pick this year.

Jets officials reportedly talked to Bailey’s agent at the Indianapolis combines this week for the most part agreed to contract terms. However, late word is that the Jets offer is not as attractive to Washington as is the Broncos’ offer of the talented Portis. A completed Bronco/Redskin deal could be announced today. If the deal blows up at the last minute, Washington may opt for the Jets offer.

Ellis, who had a breakout year this past season and made the Pro Bowl is the big jewel in this offer. Jordan has shown talent but has been playing in the shadow of Curtis Martin while Becht has never lived up to his promise. All three players are entering the final year of their contracts and the Jets likely have concern that they will not be able to re-sign one or more of them.
