The NY Daily News is reporting today that the Jets have decided to release veteran QB Vinny Testaverde after June 1st. The cutting of VT is just one small part of an expected massive player purge by Gang Green.

Testaverde, the native Long Islander who joined his home team in 1998 and nearly got the Jets to the Superbowl that same year will likely be told of his fate today. By waiting to officially release him after June 1st, the team can spread out his $7.5MM cap hit over two years. If they released him now, the full $7.5MM would be accelerated to this year’s cap which would make signing any significant free agents difficult.

While second year QB Brooks Bollinger would move up the depth chart to the number 2 guy behind starter Chad Pennington, the team will likely sign another veteran QB. It had become painfully obvious over the past two seasons that Testaverde was not a good fit for Paul Hackett’s west coast offense and rather than demote him to third string, the better option was to let him go. Testaverde, who feels he has a few more years of play left in him, will surely try to hook up with a new team. Two obvious possible destinations could be Dallas under Bill Parcells and Carolina as a backup where he could re-join former Jets offensive coordinator Dan Henning. Testaverde had his best years as a pro running Henning’s offense.

The parting with Testaverde will be just the first of many veteran departures coming shortly that could include LB Mo Lewis, LB Marvin Jones, WR Curtis Conway, CB Aaron Beasley and S Sam Garnes. The Daily News is reporting that the Lewis cut could come as early as today. Stay tuned.
