Confirming reports earlier today, the Jets and Vinny Testaverde both released statements which basically verified that the QB would not be back as a player for the team in 2004. Testaverde also revealed that he is considering retirement. NEW YORK JETS’ HEAD COACH HERMAN EDWARDS:

“Vinny Testaverde will forego participating in the upcoming offseason workouts and at this point of his career, we recognize his desire to re-evaluate his future. Vinny is a consummate professional who represents the New York Jets and the NFL in a first class manner. He’s thrown for over 40,000 yards and was a win away from the Super Bowl. His overall contributions to the game are a testament to his dedication, hard work and perseverance, and we support any decision he decides to make.”

VINNY TESTAVERDE:

“In an effort to figure out what is best for my family, myself and the New York Jets, I have informed Terry Bradway and Herman Edwards that I will not be participating in the off-season program. I am considering, unless something changes, bringing an end to my professional playing career. In discussions with the Jets' organization, they have been very positive and supportive of me. I really appreciate the opportunity to have come back to New York, my home, and have enjoyed being part of some of the most successful and exciting years the Jets have had.”

As always, Vinny is a class act all the way. The Jets will wait until June 1st to officialy release Testaverde so that his $7.5MM cap hit can be spread over two seasons. If he is not signed by another team or decides to retire, don't be surprised to see him back with the Jets in some capacity this season as a coach.
