Jets trim more fat

March 1st, 2004
The Jets continued their player purge by announcing the release of veteran LB Mo Lewis, SS Sam Garnes and FS Tyrone Carter. The Jets continued their player purge by announcing the release of veteran LB Mo Lewis, SS Sam Garnes and FS Tyrone Carter.

Lewis leaves the team as the player with the longest current tenure on Gang Green. Drafted as a 3rd rounder in 1991 he played 200 games and had over 1300 tackles for the Jets. Some will argue that Lewis is the best LB in team history. In December he was named to the Jets “All-Four Decades Team”. Unfortunately, age and nagging injuries caught up with Lewis and last season he was a shadow of his former self. Retirement is probably the next step for the classy pro.

Garnes, who was signed in 2002 off waivers from the Giants was never a good fit for Herm Edward’s cover 2 defense. Although he was a hard hitter, he never had the speed to be effective. He will be upgraded with a much faster player.

The cut of Carter is a bit of a shock based on the lack of depth the team has at the FS position. Signed as a FA last spring, Carter stepped last season in when Jon McGraw got injured and played well by registering 95 tackles and 2 INT’s. Being that his salary for 2004 was only at $525K it’s surprising he wasn’t kept as insurance.

The Jets also announced they signed another CFL player, Kenton Keith and claimed WR Jon Pentergrass off waivers from Seattle. Keith (5’11”-189), played last season for Saskatchewan where he rushed for over 700 yards in 10 games. The New Mexico state alum was undrafted by the NFL. Pentergrass (6’0”- 212), spent time in Seahawks camp and played for Frankfurt of NFL Europe last year.
