Despite several wire reports tonight that the Jets have signed crown jewel FA CB Antoine Winfield, ESPN is reporting that despite agreeing to a deal in principle, Winfield may have had a change of heart.

The change of heart could be the Houston Texans who have been reportedly hitting the redial button to Winfield’s cell phone while the Jets have been wining and dining him over the past 36 hours.

The Jets were planning a press conference on Friday to introduce the former Bills CB who is rated by many experts as the best CB on the FA market. Winfield was Buffalo’s first round pick five years ago. ESPN is reporting that just prior Winfield signing the deal he told the Jets that due to “personal reasons” he was having second thoughts. Likely, the personal reasons could be a better offer from another team. It is now believed that unless the Jets brass can convince him otherwise, he will visit and field offers from at least Houston and Minnesota (who publicly expressed big interest) before making a decision.

In other news, sources say that the Jets have re-signed G Brent Smith and K Doug Brien. Smith came to the Jets last year after being out of football due to two surgically repaired knees and cracked the starting lineup when Tom Nutten retired. Brien was signed last season to replace John Hall and had a solid season by connecting 27 of 32 FG’s and racking up 105 total points.
