Jets scramble to fill voids, sign a CB & LB
March 6th, 2004
The Jets wasted no time after Antoine Winfield left them at the altar yesterday by today signing Cardinals FA CB David Barrett and Raiders LB Eric Barton. The Jets wasted no time after Antoine Winfield left them at the altar yesterday by today signing Cardinals FA CB David Barrett and Raiders LB Eric Barton.

The 26 year old Barrett (5’10 – 200) is regarded as one of the more underrated cornerbacks in this year’s free agent class. He was originally a 4th round pick of Arizona in 2000 and last season played in all 16 games while recording 80 tackles and 1 INT. His scouting report lists him as an excellent tackler with formidable speed. For sure, Barrett is an upgrade over Aaron Beasley who he will be replacing.

According to Newsday, Barrett’s deal is worth $21MM over six years and included a $4.5MM signing bonus.

Barton, who has played all of his five seasons in Oakland was originally a 5th round pick by the Raiders. Last season he racked up 131 tackles while starting all games. Barton was regarded as one of the top FA LB’s this off season and had been a target of the Jets since the season ended. Jets Insider.com has learned that Barton’s deal is for 6 years and in the $20MM range with a $6MM signing bonus.

After the embarrassing Winfield disaster yesterday, it’s time to give the Jets front office props. In two days they have added strength to three areas that needed it bad: WR, LB and CB. The signing of Barton though, makes us think that the Jets are having second thoughts about moving John Abraham to LB. Barton will likely take over the weak side where Sam Cowart was last season.
