The Buccaneers officially released safety John Lynch last night which means that the five-time Pro-Bowler is free to sign with any team. Lynch will meet with the Jets on Friday and the team hopes to announce him as their new starting strong safety soon after.

The Buccaneers officially released safety John Lynch last night which means that the five-time Pro-Bowler is free to sign with any team. Lynch will meet with the Jets on Friday and the team hopes to announce him as their new starting strong safety soon after.

After giving Lynch the opportunity to seek a trade with another team, the Bucs realized that no team would take Lynch with his hefty current contract. Therefore, last night they made the move that was expected by putting the 32 year old four-time All-Pro on waivers.

The interest in Lynch around the league has been high. Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Atlanta have inquired and Lynch has already visited Seattle and Denver. There have also been reports that the Jets’ heated rival New England has a strong interest.

Despite all the competition, the Jets are clearly the frontrunners to sign Lynch. Lynch and Jets’ Coach Herm Edwards are close friends and Lynch is the Godfather of Edwards’ only son, Marcus. If Lynch passes his physical and GM Terry Bradway can come up with a competitive contract the Jets should have a new “Lynch Pin” on their defense by Friday afternoon. Stay Tuned.
