Jets Insider.com has learned that the team has signed restricted free agent right tackle Kareem McKenzie to a one year tender offer. The team also released RB Chad Brinker.

McKenzie, a three year vet from Penn State has been the starting RT for the Jets over the past two seasons and has been the model of consistency by only getting penalized twice during his pro career. McKenzie was originally a third round pick in 2001.

Terms of the deal were not announced by the Jets. However, Jets Insider.com learned from McKenzie’s Agent Kevin Poston that he signed his one year tender offer and the contract is not long term. Being a restricted free agent, McKenzie was tendered at the second highest level, meaning he will be paid for one year at $1.35MM. If he had signed with another team, the Jets would have received a first round pick as compensation as they did last year when the Redskins signed WR Laveranues Coles.

Poston told Jets Insider that McKenzie is not currently negotiating a long term contract but they hope to do so in the future. “Kareem did not want to be a distraction to the team coming into the new season. We hope to negotiate a long term deal when the time is right.” said Poston.

Brinker, a 5-10, 205-pound RB back from Ohio University, was in Jets camp last summer as an undrafted free agent but was cut in August. The Jets decided to re-sign him in January where he played in NFL Europe this spring.
