Vinny officially cut loose

June 1st, 2004
The Jets completed a transaction today that has been known to be coming for months by officially giving Vinny Testaverde his unconditional release. The Jets completed a transaction today that has been known to be coming for months by officially giving Vinny Testaverde his unconditional release.

The 40 year old native Long Islander joined the Jets in 1998 and in his first season took the Jets to the AFC Championship game where they lost to Denver. After tearing his Achillesí tendon in the first game of 1999 and missing the entire season, Testaverde never played at the same level and was eventually replaced as the starter by Chad Pennington in 2002. He had a brief stint as the starter again last season after Pennington injured his hand but was just 2-5 while at the helm. Despite not getting the Jets to the Superbowl, Testaverde will be remembered by most Jets fans as an extremely hard worker, fiery competitor and one of the best QBís in Jets history.

The release of Testaverde will save the Jets $1.25MM against this seasonís salary cap. Vinnyís next stop could be a reunion with former Jets Coach Bill Parcells in Dallas. With a bunch of young QBís on the roster, Vinny could be just the tutor that Parcells is looking for. Jets Insider.com has also learned that the Carolina Panthers may be interested in Testaverde as a backup to Jake Delhomme. Testaverde had his best success as an NFL QB under the tutelage of current Carolina and former Jets offensive coordinator Dan Henning.

Whatever Testaverdeís future plans may be, the staff at Jets Insider.com wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Thank you Vinny from Elmont for exciting football during your time here and the best years this team has seen since the 80ís. A true professional and class act.
