Vinny signs with the ‘Boys

June 3rd, 2004
Vinny Testaverde wasted no time finding a new team by signing a deal with the Dallas Cowboys today and reuniting with former Jets coach Bill Parcells. Vinny Testaverde wasted no time finding a new team by signing a deal with the Dallas Cowboys today and reuniting with former Jets coach Bill Parcells.

The 40 year old Testaverde signed a one year deal worth $1MM but with playing incentives, the deal could pay him as much as $5MM. Although incumbent starter Quincy Carter will go into Cowboys camp as the number one QB, Parcells told the media that Testaverde will have the opportunity to be compete for the starting job this upcoming season. Whether he starts or not, Vinny will be a valued tutor to all the young Dallas QB’s.

"The fire still burns within for me to be out on the field still playing. All I want is an opportunity," Testaverde said today. "The opportunity to compete to be a starter excites me. I didn't have that opportunity in New York."

Testaverde, who was cut by the Jets for salary cap reasons on Tuesday, played six seasons for the Jets but lost his starting job to Chad Pennington two seasons ago. He also never seemed comfortable in Paul Hackett’s West Coast Offense. Testaverde, who had his best success as a pro under Parcells, will reportedly participate in the Cowboys next minicamp which starts next Monday.

There was also another tidbit coming out of Jets camp on Tuesday when the team declined to tender a contract to CB Jamie Henderson. Henderson, who was badly hurt in a motorcycle accident in April, is now an unrestricted free agent and when (and if) he recovers, he can sign with any NFL team. Although the Jets will not owe him any money, Henderson’s medical expenses will be covered by the NFL for the next four years. Henderson was originally a fourth round pick of the Jets out of Georgia in 2001.
