It was a hard hitting, spirited practice during Monday’s afternoon session at Jets training camp. The most exciting moments of Monday afternoon’s practice came during the 11-on-11 drills as many players had the chance to impress the coaching staff.

It seems the signing of G Pete Kendall is paying off already as Kendall opened up several holes for RB Curtis Martin. The new Jet is still learning the Jets offense.

“I have played in the West Coast system in Seattle under Mike Holmgren, so I’m really familiar with the passing and that aspect of our offense,” said Kendall. “The running game is a little bit different. They like the guys to get out and run. I’ve normally been more associated with either full zone blocking teams or double-team teams, and with this we have a lot of down blocking and running.”

Offensive highlights of the afternoon included a Justin McCareins a 40 yard reception from QB Chad Pennington as the speedy wideout reached out to grab the ball over FS Erik Coleman. However, Coleman made up for it later as he nearly picked off a Pennington pass.

Head Coach Herman Edwards likes what he is seeing so far from Coleman.

“He is a guy that is learning and getting better all the time,” said the Coach. “You like that with a young guy. You are talking about a fifth-round pick…he is a tough guy, he will tackle. He is a football player and he knows how to make plays. He will make some mistakes at times, but he always seems to be around the football.”

The defensive star of the afternoon was S Omare Lowe. Lowe, who is getting a lot of reps due to the injury of Reggie Tongue is making the most of his opportunity. He was all over the field, making a stop after a Martin run and almost picking off a Pennington pass. The former University of Washington product also had a hit on McCareins that caused him to drop a pass.

CB David Barrett also deserves honorable mention for breaking up a pass for intended for McCareins and one for WR Wayne Chrebet. After a shaky first couple days of practice, the Arizona import seems to be stepping up his game.

WR Wayne Chrebet had the offensive catch of the afternoon, hooking up with Pennington for a 43 yard touchdown pass as Chrebet used his speed to break away from LB Jonathan Vilma.

Although the rookie has flashed at times during his first week of camp, Vilma knows he still has a way to go.

“That’s the biggest thing-the mental part. You just have to study more. You keep studying and keep studying so that when you go out there, you don’t have to think about it as much,” Vilma said.

SS Rashad Washington had the biggest hit of practice, as the rookie nailed RB Ian Smart after a handoff from QB Brooks Bollinger. CB Ray Mickens came limping off the field late in the practice as it appeared he had hurt his knee. But according to Edwards, he is fine. Earlier in the practice, Mickens had a near interception on a Chad Pennington pass intended for Chrebet.

Each quarterback had a chance to lead their team to a score from their own 40 with four minutes left using the play clock. Bollinger’s chance ended with a sack by DE Matt Walters while Pennington was unable to get a first down.

It seems as Bollinger is starting to turn the corner after making a series of nice passes during 7-on-7 drills. Bollinger hit WR Terrence Stubbs for a 50-yard score as Stubbs beat CB Jon Pendergrass and Lowe. Then on the next play, Bollinger and TE Mikhael Ricks connected as Lowe was beat again. WR Matt Dominquez, vying for a roster spot also had a nice catch from Bollinger.

QB Chris Finlen was 3 for 3 during 7-on-7 drills, with two passes to RB Lamont Jordan (who returned today from his excused weekend absence) and one to RB Little John Flowers. There was a new addition to the punt return unit as WR Ken-Yon Rambo was given some reps. Rambo seemed to show no ill effects from the strained hamstring that kept him out most of last week. After a Rambo catch from Finlen and run down the sideline, Edwards shouted, “fresh legs,”

Practice ended with a goal-line situation where the offense tried to score from the two-yard line. The defense was the winner of this game as Pennington threw a floater to WR Jerricho Cotchery out of bounds.

MISCELLANEUS TIDBITS: The WR rest rotation continued as Jonathan Carter was given the afternoon practice off. T Matt Knutson was waived over the weekend to make room for Pete Kendall. Lineman, long snapper Randy Chevrier changed his jersey number to 60 after Kendall was given Chevrier’s 66.

INJURY REPORT: Only one new injury to report. Rookie Safety Jarrell Weaver sat out with a stiff groin and is listed as day to day.

Here is the status on all injured Jets players.
