PENNINGTON TO MCCAREINS

Get used to that phrase because unless there is some unforeseen injury to either player you are going to be hearing it a lot this upcoming season. Get used to that phrase because unless there is some unforeseen injury to either player you are going to be hearing it a lot this upcoming season. Tuesday afternoon’s practice was the Chad Pennington to Justin McCareins show as the QB and WR seem to have found their timing by hooking up repeatedly this afternoon.

Neither were bothered by the warm, windy conditions as McCareins made a nice 20-yard catch during 7-on-7 drills. Later during full first team offense against first team defense, McCareins caught a 40-yard pass, beating CB David Barrett. McCareins later picked on Barrett again, reaching over him to haul in a 13-yard reception.

Barrett later took out his frustration on rookie WR Terrence Stubbs, with a vicious hit after Stubbs caught a pass from QB Brooks Bollinger.

WR Wayne Chrebet is showing no ill effects from the concussion that sidelined him for half the season last year and has looked rock solid. Today’s highlights included beating both S Rashad Washington and CB Ray Mickens for six yard score and later grabbing a long dart up the middle from Pennington against rookie S Erik Coleman.

With wide receivers Santana Moss, Jonathan Carter, Chris Duncan and Lawrence Hamilton all sitting out with either injury or for rest, 4th round draft pick WR Jerricho Cotchery got a chance to practice with the first team and impressed. Cotchery made several nice catches including a mid range dart while falling down and later a 40 yard TD bomb from Pennington while beating out Washington and S Derek Pagel. TE Mikhael Ricks who was an early summer free agent signing by the Jets had a nice session as well with several catches including a 10 yard score from Pennington badly beating Pagel. Pagel, who was a fifth round pick by the Jets last season could be on the roster bubble if his play does not improve.

Showing true spirit, Washington came back a few plays later to intercept a Pennington pass in the end zone. Washington also caused TE Anthony Becht to drop a Pennington pass.

Head Coach Herman Edwards is happy with what he sees from Washington so far.

“We haven’t let him (Washington) go yet but he’s starting to flash a little bit,” Edwards said.

Washington and Pagel got reps with the first team as S Jon McGraw sat out team drills. However, McGraw, who has been sidelined with a sore calf the past few days, was back in full gear and participated in individual defensive back drills during the practice. He could be back to full participation by tomorrow.

After an improved afternoon practice yesterday, QB Brooks Bollinger reverted back to his old form this afternoon. Numerous times, Bollinger was forced to run because he could not find an open receiver. Even when Bollinger found a receiver, the pass was often too high. He also made a poor decision throwing into coverage where Pagel and CB Roderick Bryant were.

Bollinger, a 2003 6th round draft pick, has struggled so far during camp. Some have labeled Bollinger a “bust” and Edwards said the same thing was said about Pennington during Pennington’s second season. However, Edwards supports Bollinger and feels he needs to get experience.

“He has to play. He has to go in there and we have to protect him and let him play with the first group and let him gain some success. It’s no different than what we did with Chad, and then we’ll see what kind of player he is. Until you can do that, I really can’t make a full assessment on the guy,” Edwards said.

MISCELLANEUS TIDBITS: RB Jonathan Reese continues to make to make a case for a spot on the team, scoring from two yards out during a red zone drill…The offensive line seems to be gelling as they opened up numerous holes for RB Curtis Martin…UDFA John Paul Foschi is one of the local players trying to make the team. Foschi, from Georgia Tech, is listed as the 5th string TE and made a nice catch from QB Ricky Ray. Later on, Foschi dropped a pass from Bollinger as LB Quincy Stewart approached…During punt return drills, Ian Smart was the only player to fumble, drawing groans from the crowd. There was a new drill during punt returns, where two players on the coverage team headed towards the returner, trying to stop the ball from going in the end zone. Muneer Moore was the only player to stop the ball from going into the end zone…Defensive Coordinator Donnie Henderson on the young defense: “I think they can be as good as they want to as long as they understand what they are supposed to do. I think what they want to do, that I am proud of, is study. They prepare themselves when they come out here. We have to do a little bit better in our communication, but other than that, I think we can be pretty good.”
