Just when several previously wounded Jets players such as LB Eric Barton and WR Wayne Chrebet returned to action today, the upbeat mood was erased when CB Ray Mickens was seen clutching his knee in pain. The Jets will also be without the services of their backup QB for at least a week while Brooks Bollinger recovers from a knee sprain suffered in the Saints’ game.

Mickens’ injury appeared to be a hyperextension that occurred during 7 on 7 drills. He left the field under his own power but walked with a very noticeable limp. Coach Edwards told the media that Mickens was immediately sent to get an MRI and the severity would not be known until tomorrow. He also announced that # 2 QB Brooks Bollinger would miss at least a week with a sprained knee.

Under cloudy skies and cool temperatures the Jets returned back to practice today after losing their opening pre-season game to the Saints on Friday 23-13. Wearing just shoulder pads and shorts, the team started the session with several agility drills. Returning back to action after missing almost all camp practices with a strained hamstring was LB Eric Barton who looked limber and showed no signs of any lingering pain. WR’s Wayne Chrebet and Ken-Yon Rambo were also back and Santana Moss was in pads but only participated in drills.

With the team having trouble in the red zone during the Saints game and scoring just once in three chances, Coach Edwards took a significant chunk of practice time working on offense inside the 20. With Bollinger out, Ricky Ray took most of the snaps as the #2 QB and will hold that job for at least until Bollinger comes back and maybe even longer if he takes advantage of the opportunity. Based on observing him today, Ray needs a lot of reps. He often was off the mark and overthrew several of his receivers.

Ray is not discouraged by his shaky performance today or last Friday in New Orleans.

“I have a ways to go,” said Ray after practice today. “I’m still learning as much as I can and trying to get comfortable with the guys out there and think I am making pretty good progress”

The team will monitor the waiver wire for quarterbacks but at this time the Coaches have no plans to bring anyone specific in.

“Obviously if there is a guy out there that we want to work out then we will work some guys out,” said Edwards. “Most teams have all their quarterbacks and I don’t know if there is anyone available at this point.”

Some are speculating that the team may contact QB Jamie Martin. At present he is available and was on the team as a backup last season when Pennington injured his hand.

Chad Pennington and rookie WR Jerricho Cotchery made the best play of the red zone drill as Cotchery caught a bullet from Pennington between three defenders for a score. After a great game Friday where he caught 3 passes for 50 yards including a nice 28 yard grab, Cotchery could be an instant impact to the Jets offense this Fall.

Later during 11 on 11 drills, Pennington continued to look sharp and completed several nice throws to WR Justin McCareins and Cotchery. The two plays of the day were a 50 yard bomb from Pennington to Wayne Chrebet perfectly thrown in stride for a TD against rookie S Eric Coleman and a Ray pass at the sideline to Matt Dominguez that WR slid on the turf perfectly to catch and caused his shorts to come down in the process. Luckily Dominguez had proper undergarments on so embarrassment was avoided.

On defense, coordinator Donnie Henderson practiced the 3-4 extensively with John Abraham moving all over the place. Abe was seen dropping into coverage on several occasions and was visibly angry at himself when he let a slant from Pennington to McCareins get by him. S Omare Lowe had the defensive play of the practice when he intercepted a Pennington pass intended for Chrebet and streaked down the sideline for a would be score.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: The Jets starters will play for at least a full quarter or more against the Colts this Saturday….With a great performance that included 56 yards rushing on Friday, RB Jonathan Reese has increased his odds at making the team.….with one punt for 13 yards on Friday, the Jets cut P Brian Simnjanovski and replaced him on the roster by signing RB Keith Burnell. Burnell, from the University of Delaware, spent time on the Jets’ practice squad last season after being in Packers camp. He will also be used as a kick returner….. CB Andrew Davidson, who was in Jets camp last season was brought in for a tryout today and the team will decide tomorrow if they want to sign him…..The team will practice in full pads tomorrow morning and shorts in the afternoon.
