The biggest news to come out of the special teams practice this morning was not on the field, but off it. The Jets added to their long injury list as Head Coach Herman Edwards announced P Toby Gowin strained his groin yesterday and the team re-signed P Brian Simnjanovski. Gowin’s injury is not deemed serious and he is day to day.

Simnjanovski was cut last Sunday and talked about when he received the call from the Jets to re-sign him.

“Yesterday. I was in California,” said the punter. My agent called me at 5:30 in the morning and I guess he said that Tampa Bay was interested and then at 7:00, or something like that, Mike Tannebaum called me and said that Toby (Gowin) went down and they brought me back. It is good to be back though. I am happy to be doing something.”

On the field though this morning, Special teams coach Mike Westhoff ran his unit through a brief practice under cool, overcast skies in preparation for Saturday night’s preseason game at Indianapolis.

Simnjanovski practiced punting the ball out of the end zone and punting inside the 50. The regular group of WR Justin McCareins, RB Ian Smart, WR Ken-Yon Rambo, and WR Roderick Bryant took the returns.

K Doug Brien showed nice leg strength on kickoffs, routinely booting 80 yard shots into the end zone. Returning the kickoffs were the normal crew of Smart, RB Johnathan Reese, RB Keith Burnell, Rambo, and WR Jonathan Carter. Smart showed nice speed on his returns as he looks to win a roster spot. Carter did a nice job returning the ball behind the blocking of RB Lamont Jordan.

Carter is ready for Saturday’s game.

“Coach Westhoff takes it very seriously and we want to be very good coming out Saturday.”

Two rookies showed they can contribute on special teams. LB Jonathan Vilma showed nice speed up the middle, rushing the punter. WR Jerricho Cotchery, displayed solid hands catching a ball in mid-air as the team practiced onside returns.

INJURY REPORT: WR Santana Moss did not participate in the special teams practice but has been upgraded to questionable for Saturday’s game. S Reggie Tongue, who returned to practice yesterday, has also been upgraded to questionable. Two new injuries to report as LB Wes Bautovich is questionable with a thigh contusion and as mentioned earlier, P Toby Gowin strained his groin yesterday and is questionable as well.

The following is the current status of the team’s injured players and their projected status for the preseason game at Indianapolis.

--RB Josh Davis (Torn ACL): Out for Season.
--WR Wayne Chrebet (Quad): Day to day. Out for Saturday.
--CB Ray Mickens (Knee): Out at least a week. Out for Saturday.
--WR Santana Moss (Hamstring): Limited activity. Questionable for Saturday.
-QB Brooks Bollinger (Knee): Out at least a week.. Out for Saturday.
--S Reggie Tongue (Calf): Limited activity. Questionable for Saturday.
--DE Joey Evans (Foot): Day to day. Out for Saturday.
--RB Derrick Ward (High Ankle Sprain): 1 week or more. Out for Saturday.
--RB B.J. Askew (Shoulder): Day to day. Questionable for Saturday.
--LB Wes Bautovich (Thigh): Day to day. Questionable for Saturday.

The team has a full practice at 3:30 today that is open to the public. Their walk through tomorrow morning in final preparation for the Colts game will be closed to the fans and media. Be sure to log on to Jets Insider.com often for all of the latest training camp news and reports.
