Carter Country

ESPN is reporting that the Jets will meet on Tuesday with former Dallas Cowboys QB Quincy Carter. Carter was released by the Cowboys on August 4th after allegedly testing positive for drugs and violating of the NFL substance abuse policy.

The report says that Carter flew to New York on Monday night and will meet with Jets officials on Tuesday and if the meeting goes well, the three year veteran will sign a one year deal with Gang Green.

Although there is suspicion that Carter violated the league’s substance abuse policy, it has not been confirmed and he has not been suspended. At this point, Carter is free to sign with any team.

The Jets are reportedly and rightly concerned with their backup QB situation. Brooks Bollinger, a second year pro with no NFL game experience is listed #2 on the depth chart but has been unimpressive and injured this training camp while 3rd string and former CFL star Ricky Ray is in his first NFL training camp and needs work.

The 26 year old Carter was originally the Cowboys' second-round pick in the 2001 draft. In three years, Carter started 31 games and completed 507 of 902 passes, for 5,839 yards, with 29 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.

If the reports of Carter’s violations are true, even if the Jets sign him, he may be facing a suspension for as much as four games this season. If Carter is signed, Bollinger will likely be the odd man out.
