On a simply gorgeous sunny afternoon, the Jets took the practice field hopefully a more complete team than yesterday due to the sudden signing of FA QB Quincy Carter this morning.

Carter, who visited the Jets last night and by morning was a Jet, was suited up and was quite visible wearing # 17. Although he spent most of the afternoon session observing, he did participate in some drills including 7 on 7’s. For the record, his first completion as a NY Jet was a out pattern to WR Matt Dominguez.

It took a while for the sting of being cut by the Cowboys to go away but the fouth year veteran from Georgia is happy to be a Jet.

“I was very surprised [on his release from Dallas],” said Carter. “But you have to move on. I’m looking forward to being a Jet and helping this team win football games however I can. I’m very excited that this organization gave me an opportunity.”

Despite the rumors of drug transgressions while in Dallas, Coach Herm Edwards is convinced that Carter is a good choice to backup Chad Pennington.

“I think Quincy is a fine young man,” said the Coach. “We had a lengthy conversation in my office and I think to have a guy like this on your football team is a plus for us.”

Carter will get more reps as practice continues and may also get a few series this Friday against the Giants. Although Dallas under Bill Parcells ran a different offense than the Jets, Carter is not afraid of the west coast system and thinks he can pick it up quickly.

“I briefly had a stint with Coach (Bruce) Coslet in the west coast offense,” said Carter. I knew a little about it. Any time you can learn three offenses in four years, no one can say I’m not a bright guy because I’m learning new offenses year after year.

During practice today, the main focus was 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills. As in the game last week, starter Chad Pennington continues to look impressive running the first team offense. His timing with all of his receivers, especially Justin McCareins is dead on. An example of this and possibly the play of the afternoon was a deep 40 yard strike from Pennington to McCareins in full stride that #89 grabbed and ran for a TD.

The signing of Carter leaves the future of 2nd year man Brooks Bollinger very cloudy. If Bollinger today was trying to tell the Jets they made a mistake by signing the new QB he did a horrible job. Bollinger as he has been all camp was off the mark during today's session. As he has done all summer, he overthrew his receivers on a regular basis and added INT's at Tuesday's practice. One of the INT’s was a nice grab by the new undrafted star of the week, CB Roderick Bryant that was brought back for a TD.

Rumors are floating that the Jets may be done with Bollinger. However, the more likely scenario is that since he was only active six games last season he will be waived and if not claimed by antoher team will be brought back on the practice squad.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: The Jets starters will likely play into the third quarter against the Giants this Friday….TE Mickhael Ricks has been making noise this week. Ricks had several nice blocks and two great catches today. One, a 30 yard catch in double coverage from Pennington that went for a score and a pretty sideline grab from Bollinger that would have likely been a TD in a game….RB LaMont Jordan got a lot of touches today and looks a bit rejuvenated….T Jason Fabini (foot) returned to practice and participated in all drills...Be sure to check out the newly uploaded training camp pictures taken today for shots of new Jets QB Quincy Carter.
