After the grueling experience of two-a-day practices during training camp this summer, the Jets hit the practice field on an unbearably humid Monday morning to prepare for the preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles this Friday.

Speaking to reporters prior to practice was head coach Herm Edwards, who addressed the status of several Jets who are nursing injuries. CB Ray Mickens, who has been sidelined with a sprained knee, will undergo a second MRI sometime next week to determine the severity of his injury and a tentative return date. Mickens is not expected to play in the season opener Sept. 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals. WR Wayne Chrebet is a game-time decision for the preseason finale Friday, Sept. 3, against the Philadelphia Eagles due to a quad injury.

With media access restricted to only the first 15 minutes, practice was rather uneventful this morning. It was regular group of WR Justin McCareins, WR Santana Moss, WR Jonathan Carter, WR Ken-Yon Rambo and RB Ian Smart fielding returns from punters Brian Simnjanovski and Toby Gowin. Both Simnjanovski and Gowin displayed solid hang time for coverage units to get downfield. One player who stood out during the brief time was WR Terrance Stubbs, who lined up at gunner and beat the double team block of CB David Barrett and rookie CB Derrick Strait to reach the returner downfield. On kickoff returns, Smart had a nice burst, while Carter continues to show good acceleration through the wedge.

INJURY REPORT

The aforementioned Moss worked during special teams drills this morning and is expected to play in the Eagles game this Friday. Rookie RB Derrick Ward returned to practice and served on kickoff return units after suffering a high ankle sprain earlier in training camp. S Reggie Tongue participated in drills this morning after sitting out the Giants game with a hamstring injury. TE Chris Baker, who had been bothered by an ankle injury, took his usual spot as a wedge blocker.

-DE Bryan Thomas (hamstring). Sat out practice. Out for at least 1-2 weeks.
-CB Ray Mickens (knee) sat out practice. Out for Friday.
-WR Wayne Chrebet (quad) sat out practice. Game-time decision for Friday.
-WR Santana Moss (hamstring) returned to practice. Expected to play Friday.

There will not be an afternoon practice as the team assumes a one-a-day practice schedule. First cuts are tomorrow when the team must reduce its roster to 65 players down from the present number of 75. Be sure to check back to Jets Insider.com often for all of the latest NY Jets news and reports.
