The Jets began their first phase of reducing their roster to a mandatory 53 players by waiving 12.

The Jets began their first phase of reducing their roster to a mandatory 53 players by waiving 12.

On the chopping block were LB Wes Bautovich, TE's Casey Cramer & John Paul Foschi, WR Matt Dominguez, RB Little John Flowers, C Curt McGill, G Jason Nerys, T Lance Nimmo, WR Ken-Yon Rambo, TE Mikhael Ricks, RB Ian Smart and LB Ryan Myers.

It’s a surprise that both Rambo and Dominguez were released as it was speculated that the Jets would keep six WR’s on the roster especially with Wayne Chrebet nursing a sore quad and missing all but the first pre-season game. Rambo’s future with the team was hurt from the beginning of camp when he missed a lot of time with an injured hamstring. Dominguez, the CFL import, flashed at times but was still quite raw. Unless the team picks up another WR on waivers the Jets will open next Sunday with Justin McCareins and Santana Moss as the starters with Jonathan Carter, Wayne Chrebet and rookie Jerricho Cotchery as the extra wideouts. During Coach Herm Edwards’ Saturday conference call, he didn’t seem overly optimistic that Chrebet would be ready by next week.

“That’s 50-50,’ said the coach on Chrebet’s return next Sunday. “I think he ran last night and did some things. I think he is feeling better. I have a feeling that he is probably going to show up the first game. It is day-to-day now.”

The release of Ricks was also a bit of a surprise considering the Jets battled several other teams to bring him in here this spring. In the end, while the seven year vet made plays here and there including five catches for 43 yards last night against Philly, he was inconsistent and dropped several catches throughout the pre-season. The team will now split the TE duties between Anthony Becht and Chris Baker. James Dearth is also on the roster as a TE but his primary duty is long snaps on field goals and punts.

Local product and sentimental favorite RB Ian Smart from CW Post failed to make it through his second Jets training camp however, showed huge improvement from last year and is a practice squad candidate.

The Jets roster now stands at 61 players and the team must trim another 8 by tomorrow at 4PM to get to the mandatory 53.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: Although QB Quincy Carter was brought in to be the Jets #2 QB, it’s still possible that QB Brooks Bollinger could be #2 on opening day due to his better knowledge of the offense at this point….QB Ricky Ray will almost surely be released tomorrow and the Jets will try to re-sign him to the practice squad. However, this may not be a lock due to the fact that several other teams were interested in Ray before the Jets signed him. It’s possible that another team may sign the former CFL Grey Cup Champion to their active roster….Rookie LB Darrell McClover was the only injured Jet last night with a twisted ankle. The injury isn’t serious and he isn’t expected to miss any action. The Coach expects that starting CB Donnie Abraham (shoulder) and S Jon McGraw (groin) will be ready to go against the Bengals while Nickleback Ray Mickens will undergo another MRI this week to check the healing in his knee and probably won’t be ready.
