The New York Jets trimmed their roster to the required 53 players by announcing the cuts of 8 more players.

CB Andrew Davison, DT Alan Harper, DB Omare Lowe, WR Terrence Stubbs, QB Ricky Ray, DE Matt Walters, RB Derrick Ward G Dave Yovanovits were trimmed to meet the mandatory roster number of 53 players. The team will now sign eight players to the practice squad and most if not all will be from the Jets’ cut list.

The biggest surprise is DE Matt Walters who was originally a fifth round pick out of Miami last season and during brief times in the lineup showed flashes of talent. He was beat out by this year’s seventh round pick Trevor Johnson of Nebraska.

RB Derrick Ward was touted in the spring by some as a steal in the seventh round of this year’s draft and the Jets were hoping to get a good look at him this camp as a possible replacement for LaMont Jordan. However, the Ottawa (Kansas) University missed virtually all of camp with a high ankle sprain. He is a possible practice squad candidate.

Ward’s spot on the roster was taken by Jonathan Reese who after his third Jets training camp finally made the active roster. Reese had a great camp and led the team in rushing for the second straight summer.

The Cinderella of the 2004 Jets camp is without a doubt CB Roderick Bryant. The Idaho alum went undrafted in April and thought his NFL dream might be over. However, the Jets scouted him, invited him to camp and then signed him as a free agent. Bryant then went on to show his stuff this summer and earn a spot on the roster.

The team returns to practice tomorrow and will host the Cincinnati Bengals in the season opener at the Meadowlands a week from today at 1:00 p.m.
