In a bit of a surprising move, the team announced the release of running back Jonathan Reese and the signing of defensive tackle Daleroy Stewart who was recently cut by the Cowboys.

Reese was one of the Jets feel good stories of the summer. Originally an undrafted free agent out of Columbia University, he participated in two previous training camps and finally made the opening day roster. Throughout the pre-season Reese was the top rusher on the team and even this week was listed ahead of veteran LaMont Jordan on the depth Chart. There was even talk that Reese could be the heir apparent to Jordan who is in the final year of his contract and likely won’t be back next year.

The only logic in this move could be the emergence of RB Derrick Ward, who was the team’s seventh round draft pick this year but was hampered by a high ankle sprain all training camp. Ward was eventually cut and now resides on the team’s practice squad. Word from camp is that he is now healthy and the team will likely sign him to the active roster. The team loved Ward during mini camp and OTA’s and feels he has many of the same attributes of Jordan. The move leaves Jordan as the only halfback on the roster behind starter Curtis Martin.

Stewart (6-4, 327 Lbs.), from Southern Mississippi University, was originally drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He suffered a torn rotator cuff in his senior year at Southern Miss that required season-ending surgery and forced him to miss the entire 2001 NFL season. Stewart made the Cowboys’ roster in 2002 but was inactive for games one through 16. In 2003, he saw action in 15 games (one start) and recorded 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He made the Cowboys roster this season but was released September 14 when DT Leo Carson came back from an NFL suspension. The signing of Stewart increases the number of defensive tackles on the roster to a total of five.
