After an undefeated September, New York Jets head coach Herm Edwards addressed the concern of a letdown following the team’s bye this week.

After an undefeated September, New York Jets head coach Herm Edwards addressed the concern of a letdown following the team’s bye this week.

“(The players) know who this head coach is,” Edwards said sternly. “They got no chance to do that. They can kind of breathe this week, (but) they know I’m watching; I’m looking.”

Although the team can celebrate knowing they have had a successful start to their season, it has not hindered their preparation for the remaining bulk of the year.

“Most of the guys are going to hang around this week,” Edwards said. “I think they’ll rest, but I think as a player, you start off 2-0, you feel good about yourself. You want the week to hurry up so you can get (to playing again).”

Edwards mentioned that the change in mentality during the off-season has been the primary reason for the players’ commitment this year.

“You see guys coming in on their day off and lifting (weights),” Edwards said. “There’s between 20 and almost 30 guys here. That’s kind of the whole mindset of the football team. That was the change in structure we orchestrated in the off-season.”

RANDOM TIDBITS: As previously reported, DT Josh Evans was placed on the Injured Reserve list due to a lower back injury, officially ending his season....With Evans going on the IR, the team used the open roster spot to sign center Drew Caylor off the Steelers’ practice squad. Caylor (6’5”-291), from Stanford University, was a sixth round choice of Pittsburgh in this year’s draft and was released during final cuts. He had been on the Steelers practice squad until the Jets signed him today....Veteran CB Ray Mickens, who is out for the season with a knee injury, underwent successful surgery last week....DL Bryan Thomas who has been hampered by a sore hamstring since training camp, should be healthy for next Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins and will likely play both end and tackle positions…QB Chad Pennington and RB Curtis Martin have both been given time off in practice this week to rest. In their place, QB Quincy Carter and RB Lamont Jordan have been taking first-team reps....Former CW Post star RB Ian Smart, who has been in the last two Jets training camps and cut on each occasion, was signed yesterday to Tampa Bay’s practice squad.
