The last time the Jets started 3-0 was 2000. With Al Groh at the helm the team stumbled down the stretch and failed to make the playoffs. Current Head Coach Herman Edwards has seen this happen to many teams during his years in the NFL and despite constant questions today about a possible undefeated showdown against New England in three weeks he refuses to look past the 0-3 Bills coming to town this Sunday.

“We’re facing a team (Buffalo) that obviously has a good defense, they got a good runner, they got a good wide-out and they got a veteran quarterback,” the HC said. “So we’re facing a team that’s hungry. They haven’t won a game yet. They’re going to come down here playing hard because they’ve been in every game too.”

Edwards was proud of his team’s recent road success.

“We needed to go on the road and win two road games in a row,” Edwards said. “We were able to do that. That was kind of important too. You always want to win coming off the bye. Kind of helps you get going again.”

The Jets defense was outstanding yesterday, holding the Dolphins to nine points while forcing the Dolphins into four turnovers. The Coach feels the defense is starting to gel.

“I think players are getting more comfortable in what (Defensive Coordinator) Donnie (Henderson) is asking them to do,” Edwards said. “I think Donnie is getting comfortable in what they can do as well.”

The Jets linebackers had a solid game. Eric Barton had a fumble recovery and Victor Hobson intercepted a Jay Fiedler pass. Rookie Jonathan Vilma started in place of the injured Sam Cowart and led the team with eight tackles. “I thought the linebackers did a good job,” the HC said. They all kind of made some plays, they flashed. When you hold them to nine points, doesn’t mater. That’s a good day’s work.”

Edwards praised the offensive line who paved the way for RB Curtis Martin to gain 110 yards and a touchdown. C Kevin Mawae played with a cast protecting his broken finger on his right hand and snapped with his left. He also switched on two occasions with G Pete Kendall and paved the block at G for Curtis Martin’s touchdown. LT Jason Fabini played with a sore back and also did a good job.

The Jets are 3-0 but Edwards feels it will take to week eight to have a full evaluation of his team.

“By week eight we’ll know what our record is, we’ll know what we’ve accomplished thus far,” Edwards said. “We’ll know our players a lot better. Then I can make a safe evaluation of, this I where I think we’re at, go from there.”

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: The Jets are 3-0 for only the third time in team history…CB Donnie Abraham injured his hip against the Dolphins but ran today and Edwards said he should be fine….Reports say that LB Sam Cowart’s knee is healing ahead of schedule and he may be back sooner than thought….DE Bryan Thomas saw his first action of the season yesterday and was also used as a tackle in dime packages. He finished with 2 tackles and one assist.

The team has Tuesday off and returns to practice on Wednesday. Check back to Jets Insider.com for all the latest team news and reports.
