Baltimore Ravens K Matt Stover kicked a 42-yard field goal with 7:39 left in overtime to give the Ravens a 20-17 victory over the Jets. In a game that was marred by penaties, questionable play calls and poor clock management, it was the second consecutive loss for the Jets, who are now 6-3.

The Jets blew a 14-0 lead, letting the Ravens score 17 unanswered points. Jets K Doug Brien’s 20-yard field goal with five seconds left in regulation tied the game at 17 before the Ravens came out on top in overtime.

The Ravens offense received the ball to start the game and drove 71 yards in 15 plays and 9:44 but were kept off the scoreboard as they went for it on fourth and one from the Jets one-yard line and came up empty as Jets DE John Abraham stopped Ravens RB Jamal Lewis. The Jets did a nice job throughout the day containing Lewis, holding him to 71 yards on 30 carries.

The Jets offense took the field led by QB Quincy Carter. Carter led the Jets to the Raven 46 before the drive stalled.

However the Jets got the ball right back as Ravens rookie punt returner B.J. Sams muffed the fair catch. Jets LB Kenyatta Wright came up with the ball, giving the Jets great field position at the Ravens 12-yard line.

Carter handed off to RB Curtis Martin four straight times and the fourth time was the charm as RG Brandon Moore and RT Kareem McKenzie led the way for Martin’s one-yard TD score. The drive took four plays, 12 yards and 1:59. After Brien’s extra point, the Jets led 7-0.

The Jets defense forced the Ravens to punt on their next two possessions.

The Jets began their fourth drive at their own 18. The Jets drove 82 yards in eight plays and 4:14 capped off by Martin’s nine-yard TD run. Martin, who had never rushed for 100 yards against the Ravens, carried 28 times for 119 times today. The key play of the drive came on third and five from the Ravens 43 as Carter passed to RB Lamont Jordan for 25 yards. An unnecessary roughness penalty on LB Ray Lewis was tacked onto the play, giving the Jets first and goal at the Ravens nine. On the next play, Carter handed to Martin, who ran right down the middle behind the blocking of FB Jerald Sowell. Brien’s extra point sailed through the uprights and the Jets took a 14-0 lead.

After Baltimore went three and out, the Jets took over at their own 35. Martin ran for one-yard. On the next play, Carter showed his arm strength, passing to WR Santana Moss for 47 yards. Moss finished the day as the Jets leading receiver with three catches for 75 yards. On 1st and 10 from the Ravens 17, the Jets tried a halfback option to Jordan that they had run dozens of times in practice. But the play didn’t run as smooth as it had in practice as Jordan couldn’t find anyone in the end zone and tried to throw the ball out of bounds. Baltimore S Ed Reed was right there and intercepted the pass in the end zone. Reed ran it back 104 yards but the touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty on Baltimore.

Despite it being a questioable call to begin with, being Carter was 8 for 8 at the time in passing, Jordan said he takes full blame for the bad pass.

“I take responsibility,” Jordan said. “I went to throw the ball way and didn’t get the job done.”

The Ravens took over at the Jets 36 and were able to capitalize on the turnover as WR Clarence Moore caught a six-yard TD from QB Kyle Boller putting the Ravens on the board. The key play in the drive was fourth and eight from the Jets 34 as Boller passed to WR Chester Taylor for 23 yards. The drive took just 53 seconds and went 36 yards in six plays. Jets DT Jason Ferguson talked about what went wrong on defense.

“We had a breakdown in the red zone,” Ferguson said. “We have to look at each other and figure out what’s wrong.”

The teams went into the locker room with the Jets up 14-7 but the momentum had clearly shifted to the Ravens.

The Jets received the ball to begin the second half but went three and out. It was a common theme for the Jets in the second half as they had to punt on five of their six possessions.

The Ravens began their first drive of the second half at the Jets 47. They drove to the Jets six but on third and goal, CB Donnie Abraham broke up a pass intended for WR Randy Hymes. The Ravens settled for a 24 yard Matt Stover field goal to move within four points at 14-10 with 8:38 left in the third quarter.

The Ravens took their first lead of the game with 4:13 left in the game after Moore caught a 16-yard TD pass from Boller. The drive took nine plays, 75 yards and ate up 5:11 of the clock..

The Jets got great field position after Jordan returned the kickoff 40 yards to the Jets 45. Carter then led the offense down the field to the Ravens' three yard line. The Jets had a 2nd and goal with one time out but the Jets poor clock management bit them again. They blew a shot to score and put the game away by taking too much time in the huddle and were forced to burn their final time out to avoid a delay of game penalty. So, with eight seconds left, they had to settle for a game tying 20-yard field goal by Brein.

The Jets received the ball first in overtime but went three and out.

The Ravens then went three and out on their first possession of overtime as CB Terrell Buckley broke up a pass intended for Hymes.

The Jets went three and out on their next possession and gave the Ravens great field possession after the punt.

The Ravens began on their own 44 and converted a big third down as WR Kevin Johnson caught a 21 yard pass from Boller. Matt Stover attempted a 42 yard field goal with 7:39 left in overtime and it was good, giving the Ravens the victory.

Head Coach Herman Edwards was frustrated by the loss.

“It’s a very tough loss for us,” Edwards said. “The momentum got away from us when we had the ball intercepted.”

Carter was 13-for-22 and 175 yards.

“He played ok,” Edwards said of Carter’s performance.

Martin also evaluated the QB’s performance. “We feel he played good,” Martin said. “He played well enough for us to win.”

In his post-game press conference, Carter said the team takes full blame for the loss. “We take our lumps as a football team and don’t point fingers,” Carter said.

Carter said the Jets now have to figure out what direction they are heading in.

“We have two tough losses in November and have to figure out what way we’ll go,” Carter said.
