It wasn’t a pretty win but the Jets defeated the Cleveland Browns, 10-7 in a defensive battle. The Jets snap a two game losing streak with the victory and improve to 7-3.

WR Justin McCareins caught a 11-yard touchdown pass from QB Quincy Carter with 5:32 left in the game that gave the Jets their first lead of the game. McCareins was huge, finishing with six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.

RB Curtis Martin surpassed the 1,000 yard mark on the season, making him and Barry Sanders the only backs in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of their first 10 seasons in the league. Martin carried 17 times for 88 yards despite bruising his knee in the second quarter.

After a lethargic first half, Carter finished the game 11-of-20 for 116 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Jets received the ball to begin the game and were on fire early as Carter hit McCareins for a pair of 12-yard gains. After two short runs by Martin, K Doug Brien came on to attempt a 43-yard field goal. Cleveland’s Orpheus Roye blocked the kick and the Browns got the ball.

Jets P Toby Gowin and Browns P Derrick Frost traded eight punts before the Browns finally got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter as Browns QB Jeff Garcia connected with a wide-open TE Aaron Shea for a three-yard score. K Phil Dawson’s extra point made it 7-0. The drive took five plays, 57 yards and 2:16.

The Jets went three and out on their next possession.

The Browns looked to go up by 10 late in the second half but Dawson’s 42-yard field goal was wide right. On the drive, Garcia was hurt and never came back into the game. It was a rare miss for Dawson, who had made his previous 27 field goal attempts. Garcia was forced to leave the game after injuring his throwing shoulder and was replaced by QB Kelly Holcomb. Garcia was 10-of-17 for 88 yards before he had to leave the game. The Jets rattled Holcomb the entire second half as he finished 4-of-10 for 32 yards.

Neither team was able to move the ball the rest of the half and the Browns went into the locker room up 7-0.

The Jets struggled throughout the first half, only amassing 79 total yards of offense and were 0-9 on third downs. The Jets offensive line also uncharteristically surrendered five first half sacks and let the Browns get to Carter six times overall. The team had not given up that many sacks in one game since 1999.

The Browns punted on their first possession of the second half and the Jets began their first possession of the second half on their own 29.

Using a steady does of Martin and RB Lamont Jordan carrying the ball, the Jets moved to the Browns 23-yard line. On fourth-and-three, Brien nailed a 41-yard field goal to get the Jets on the board and make the score 7-3 Browns.

The Jets defense held strong on the next possession forcing the Browns to go three-and-out.

On third-and-six from the Browns 43, Carter threw a long pass intended for WR Santana Moss in the end zone but it was intercepted by the Browns Earl Little who returned it 28 yards to the Browns 30 with 4:14 left in the third quarter

Eating up the clock, Holcomb drove his team to the Jets 17 before the drive stalled. Dawson attempted a 34-yard field goal but again it was wide right.

Trailing 7-3, Carter and the Jets took over at their own 25 with 11:27 left in the game. The Jets used a steady dose of rushing the ball as they moved to the Browns 35. On third-and-11, McCareins came up huge, catching the pass from Carter and stretching for the first down. It was only two third down conversions for the Jets as they finished 2-14 on third downs. On the next play, WR Santana Moss caught a 13-yard pass and the Jets had first-and-10 from the Browns 11. Carter found McCareins for the score and after Brien’s extra point, the Jets took their first lead of the game at 10-7. The Jets marched 75 yards down the field in 10 plays and 5:55. On the drive, Carter was 3-for-3 for 35 yards.

The Browns began their final drive with 5:27 left in the game on their own 24. Rookie S Erik Coleman made a huge play on third-and-six from the Browns 44 as he sacked Holcomb. The Browns were forced to punt and hoped to stop the Jets.

Moss’ eight-yard punt return gave the Jets the ball at their own 23. Carter handed off to Jordan six straight times and Jordan picked up three first downs as the Jets were then able to run out the clock. Jordan finished with 18 carries for 73 yards.

MISCELANEOUS GAME TIDBITS: The Jets inactives were QB Chad Pennington, QB Ricky Ray (3rd QB), S Jon McGraw, S Rashad Washington, LB Jason Glenn, G Dave Yovanovits, T Marco Cavka, and DT Alan Harper.....This was the Jets first trip to Cleveland since 1994…LB Eric Barton finished with a team-best 10 tackles....RB Curtis Martin strained his knee in the first half but returned to action in the third quarter......LB Victor Hobson sprained his knee but the severity is unknown.

The Jets hit the road again next Sunday when they face the Arizona Cardinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. eastern time. Check back to Jets throughout the week for all the latest information.
