QB Chad Pennington is expected to miss his third straight game, Jets Head Coach Herman Edwards said today at Hofstra. Pennington was re-evaluated by team doctors today and Edwards said they gave the go-ahead for Pennington to start throwing.

“He’s getting better,” Edwards said.

A second MRI is not needed. “It’s just a matter of letting the body heal,” Pennington said after yesterday’s 10-7 win over Cleveland. “A picture’s not really going to change anything. They’ve seen all they need to.”

Edwards said Pennington needs to build up his arm strength.

“It’s a progression,” the HC said.

Carter has done an ok job filling in for Pennington the past two games. Yesterday, Carter completed 11-of-20 passes for 116 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Edwards assessed Carter’s performance so far as a starter.

“For the most part he's done a pretty good job,” Edwards said. “I'd like to see him just be himself a little bit more. I think he's being too careful at times. I know he has the ability to move a little bit, and he hasn't done that yet. But that will come. I think he's just trying to work his way in the pocket, find his way in the pocket. I just think the more he plays, the more comfortable he's going to become in what we're asking him to do.”

RB Curtis Martin rushed for 88 yards yesterday and became just the second player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards the first 10 seasons of their career. Martin also passed Tony Dorsett for sixth place on the NFL All-Time leading rushers list. Martin bruised his knee in the second quarter but Edwards said Martin will be fine.

“He had an MRI,” Edwards said. “Bruised knee, so he's fine. He'll practice this week.I anticipate he'll play.”

RB Lamont Jordan showed why the Jets need to re-sign him as he rushed for 73 yards. Edwards was pleased with Jordan’s performance.

“He’s our bruiser,” Edwards said. “Generally when he comes in the game, a couple things are happening: we’re trying to run out the clock or we’re trying to make tough yards running. He can break tackles. That's what he did. He went in there with the mindset we were going to give him the ball. We didn't want to throw the ball, we were going to run the ball. He ended up making some great runs. Sometimes we missed a couple blocks, he still was able to fight through it, not fumble the ball, make yardage for us. It's a tribute to him, what type of player he is. In a runner, there's not a lot of runners in the National Football League that can do what LaMont can do.”

MISCELANEOUS TIDBITS: With 4:14 left in the third quarter, Carter’s pass intended for WR Santana Moss was intercepted by the Browns Earl Little at the Cleveland 2 yard line. Little returned the interception to the 30. It appeared his knee was down at the 2 and that Moss had touched him. The Browns drove into field goal range before Phil Dawson missed his second field goal. Edwards talked about why he didn’t challenge the call on the interception. “The problem is, I don't have the same view,” Edwards said. “I think upstairs, they have to look at it and tell me. At that point they weren't either/or. So at that point I can't say. I can't see it. It's hard for me to see. So at that point I asked. They said, ‘Well, we don't know, Coach.’ When they start telling me we don't know, maybe, if, but, I'm like, ‘Forget it.’”…The Jets defense has shown a steady improvement from last season and is 10th in the NFL, allowing 301.5 yards per game. Much of that can be attributed to defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson’s aggressive system. “I think we're getting better,” the HC said. “I think they're getting a little bit of a swagger going. I think they know what they have to do down the stretch here. We got to play very, very good on defense down the stretch. And I think they're starting to enjoy playing that way. Yesterday, they were playing. I mean, they played really good, they really did.”

INJURY REPORT: As stated above, QB Chad Pennington is listed as out and will start throwing this week. LB Jason Glenn remains out with a fractured forearm he suffered in the Jets loss to the Patriots. S Rashad Washington was inactive yesterday and is probable. S Jon McGraw was also inactive and is questionable. There were three new injuries to come out of yesterday’s game: RB Curtis Martin is probable after suffering a bruised knee. Edwards said Martin will practice and should be able to play on Sunday. LB Victor Hobson, who is sixth on the team with 42 tackles, suffered a high ankle sprain and is out for Sunday. Mark Brown will start in his place. Brown has mainly played on special teams this year. Rookie WR Jerricho Cotchery hurt his hamstring and is out.
