CW Post RB Ian Smart: Diamond in the rough?
Local dynamo, CW Post RB Ian Smart waited patiently by the phone in front of his TV this weekend hoping an NFL Team would draft him. After a glorious college career where Smart finished fourth on the all time NCAA rushing list with 6647 yards and also broke the all time NCAA career record for touchdowns (95) and points scored (570) Smart was confident he could help any team that drafted him. Although he did play for a Division II program and lacks size (5-8, 192 Lbs), surely an NFL team would take a shot and draft a guy with a resume like his.
Unfortunately the call never came. The guy who had more college rushing yards and scored more touchdowns than blue chip RBs such Herschel Walker, LaDainian Tomlinson and Archie Griffin is still unemployed a day after the NFL Draft ended.
Reports today say that the Jets have offered Smart a three-day tryout at this weekends upcoming minicamp. If they are "Smart" they should take advantage of this local protege from Long Islands North Babylon High School and sign him ASAP.
Smart is a slippery instinctive runner. Although he has been eating up inferior Division II opponents for four years, he still is a unique talent that could contribute significantly for the Jets on special teams and as a third down back. Ive seen Smart play for Post and he is truly a joy to watch.
With the departure of RB Chad Morton to Washington, Jets special teams guru Mike Westhoff could groom Smart to be a formidable replacement for Morton. With no obvious choice to replace Morton currently on the Jets roster, Smart could be a diamond in the rough. He is a Westhoff type player: Gritty, hard working and smashmouth.
Get Smart, Terry and Herm...give the kid a shot. I have a feeling youll be glad you did.
