As scheduled, Jets QB Chad Pennington underwent a procedure on Tuesday to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The surgery was performed in Birmingham Alabama by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews.

Despite some reports that the surgery might have been more complex than originally thought, no further damage was found and the entire procedure was reportedly done minimally invasive with an arthroscope.

Head Coach Herman Edwards released a statement after the procedure confirming a success.

"As per the original diagnosis from Dr. Pellman and Dr. Montgomery, there were no surprises found during the operative procedure performed today on the right shoulder of Chad Pennington," said Coach Edwards. "According to the report Dr. Andrews gave to Dr. Pellman, the operation was a success. Both physicians are cautiously optimistic that Chad will be ready for the beginning of training camp."

Pennington will keep the arm immobilized in a sling for several weeks and should be able to start throwing in May.

Following up the story about backup Jets QB Quincy Carter re-entering a substance abuse program in December, the Coach offered his support in a released statement without actually confirming the story.

“On behalf of the Jets organization, I would like to make a statement in support of Quincy Carter. Some of the rumors surrounding this situation deal with personal and confidential matters that we cannot and should not discuss. Quincy’s representatives assure us that Quincy is doing well.

However, what we can say is that as a New York Jet, Quincy has done everything and more that was asked of him, he came to work early, stayed late, and exhibited good character the entire time. When Chad Pennington was injured, Quincy stepped into a tough situation and won two-of-three games for us, making it possible for the Jets to reach the playoffs. In fact, as I’ve said before, if not for Quincy’s performance during that time, the Jets would not have made the playoffs.

After being around Quincy this past year, not only can I say that he is a good football player, but I can also say that he is of good character. Regardless of the rumors, the facts are that the year before he came here, Quincy led his team to the playoffs, and for the Jets, he came in at a critical time to win games and help us get to the playoffs. So, we appreciate and support Quincy as a member of the New York Jets organization.”

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: The Jets confirmed what was reported by us last week by officially announcing that former Tampa Bay assistant Jeremy Bates has been named new Jets QB’s coach. The team also announced that current offensive assistant Pep Hamilton has been promoted to WR’s coach. He replaces Jim Hostler who joined the 49ers staff under new coach Mike Nolan.
