The Jets confirmed today what everyone has known for months by announcing that Pro-Bowl Defensive End John Abraham has been named their franchise player.

The Jets confirmed today what everyone has known for months by announcing that Pro-Bowl Defensive End John Abraham has been named their franchise player.

The one year deal is worth $6.7MM which is the average salary of the five top paid defensive ends in the league. The tagging essentially takes Abraham off the free agent market. If another team signs him they would have to compensate the Jets with two first round picks. There has been some speculation in the press that Abraham could be trade bait and most of the talk has been about a possible deal for Vikings’ WR Randy Moss. If there is no trade, the tagging gives the team time to try to negotiate a long term contract.

Abraham is a five year veteran who was one of four first round draft picks the Jets had in 2000. He had 9 ˝ sacks this past year and has had 43 sacks during his Jets career. Abraham’s season was cut short this year due to a knee injury. He missed the final four regular season games , the playoffs and the Pro Bowl due to the injury.

The franchising of Abraham virtually assures that RB LaMont Jordan will be testing the free agency market unless a long term deal can be reached by March 2nd.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: Reports are surfacing today that the Jets have hired Marcus Paul from the Patriots to replace departed strength coach, John Lott who left for Cleveland earlier this week.

Paul has been the assistant strengh and conditioning coach for the Pats for the past five seasons. He was also a player in the NFL for the Bears where he was a safety from 1989-1993.

Niether the Jets or the Patriots have confirmed the signing.
