The Jets officially announced that former Patriots’ assistant strength and conditioning coach Marcus Paul has been named the Club’s Director of Physical Development, replacing John Lott who joined the Brown’s staff last week. The team also announced a few roster moves including the release of CB Jamie Henderson who is still recovering from a motorcycle accident last spring.

Paul will be assisted by Sal Alosi, who was named Assistant Director of Physical Development. Alosi is a former collegiate standout at Hofstra University, in the team’s physical development department. He has been with the Jets since 2002.

The Club also announced that Dick Curl’s new title will be Assistant to the Head Coach/Running Backs Coach. Curl’s new title likely means that Bishop Harris, who coached the Jets’ running backs last season, will not be with the Jets in 2005. Published reports say that Harris was given permission by the Jets to interview with both Cleveland and San Francisco for open assistant positions. Harris’ became famous in January when he had an open shouting match with Head Coach Herm Edwards on the sidelines of the Jets-Chargers wildcard playoff game regarding the running back rotation.

The Jets also made some minor roster moves by announcing that WR Donovan Morgan and DT Alonzo Shuler were waived and that CB Jamie Henderson was waived/failed physical.

Henderson was injured in a motorcycle accident in Georgia last April. The team signed him in September and designated him on the reserved NFI (non-football injury) list, and he missed the 2004 season. He continues to rehabilitate his injury under the supervision of the UGA head trainer and strength coach while attending school.

Morgan, a wide receiver from Louisiana-Lafayette, and Shuler, a defensive tackle from Benedict (S.C.) College each had signed with the Jets as free agents following the 2004 season. Both Morgan and Shuler had previously attended training camp with the Jets.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS: Reports have surfaced that former Jets WR Laveranues Coles will be released form the Redskins and that the Jets may have an interest in a reunion if the price is right. Coles was signed by Washington as a restricted free agent in 2003. At the time, his $13MM signing bonus and $35MM contract was the largest given to a wideout in NFL history. Coles, 27 is apparently unhappy with his role in Joe Gibbs’ run oriented offense.

If Coles is unattainable, another name mentioned as a possible addition to the Jets WR’s corps is Derrick Mason who was waived yesterday by the Titans in a huge salary cap purge. Mason, 31, was a favorite of new Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger while he was in Tennessee and led all NFL receivers last season with a career-high 96 catches for 1,168 yards and seven touchdowns. The eight-year veteran was the first player in franchise history to have four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. Minnesota’s Randy Moss, who was a hot trade suitor to the Jets has apparently gotten very cold. Most likely, the Vikings ridiculous asking price turned the Jets off.

The two Jets veterans that have the highest probability of being cut before March 1st are S Reggie Tongue who is due a $400K roster bonus and WR Wayne Chrebet who is due $250K of a 400K bonus by March 1st. LB Sam Cowart, who has requested a trade is also due a roster bonus but not until June 1st.
