As the NFL free agency period starts today Jets DT Jason Ferguson reportedly has been lured away by Bill Parcells and the Dallas Cowboys.
Although no official announcement has been made, the NJ Star Ledger is confirming the signing which reportedly took place late last night right after the free agency period started at midnight. No terms of the deal were available.
Ferguson, who was originally drafted in the 7th round by Parcells in 1997 while he was head coach of the Jets, was an integral part of the team's revived run defense of 2004. The Jets were scrambling to get Ferguson signed before free agency started but could not reach terms.
The Jets now have a big void in the middle of the defensive line with Ferguson gone. DT Josh Evans who missed most of last year due to injury rejected a Jets offer for a veteran minimum contract and became a free agent today. Although Evans is still a possibility, the team will likely look for a stronger and more reliable replacement. One name that has surfaced is Bills' FA DT Pat Williams who the Jets will reportedly meet with as soon as today.
-CB Roderick "Gameday" Bryant who was the "feel good" story of training camp last summer by making the team as an undrafted free agent, was released today.
The former Idaho alum was used last season mostly on special teams where he was active for 12 games. He was inactive for both of the Jets' post-season games.
-The Jets did not release WR Wayne Chrebet and the veteran will receive his scheduled $250K roster bonus and return for an 11th season. CB Ray Mickens and S Reggie Tongue who had also been mentioned as possible cap casualties, have apparently avoided the Turk for now.
-Newsday is reporting that the Jets are close to signing Bills FA tackle Jonas Jennings who would replace T Kareem McKenzie who becomes an unrestricted free agent today.
-Despite reports that the Coles/Moss deal is dead, our sources tell us that the sides are still speaking and a deal may still be consummated. One big hurdle that has been overcome is the Redskins have re-signed T Chris Samuels to a long term deal which frees up the cap space Washington needed to complete a trade. The Jets have also reportedly become willing to absorb a portion of Coles' upcoming $5MM roster bonus.
-RB LaMont Jordan coming back to the Jets seems more unlikely by the minute. The new free agent will begin to listen to offers today and three teams that have been rumored to be interested are Oakland, Philadelphia and Tampa. ESPN is reporting that Jordan is meeting with the Raiders today.
-Cross Derrick Mason off the list of potential additions to the Jets' offense. The talented wideout who was released recently by the Titans in a salary cap purge, signed a five year contract today with the Ravens.
